Trigger warning:
This chapter contains descriptions of (sexual) violence that may be upsetting to some readers, so read on your own discretion.

Trying to imitate the behaviour of the experienced dog, he averted his eyes and got off his butt, wanting to go back to the room and pretend he didn’t have a clue what was going on, but the evil voice arrested Jaeyoon’s feet.

“I don’t even have to ask how you got in, that idiot must have opened the door. How dare you think about stepping into my house again? Why are there so many who forgot how to fear, is there a class somewhere for raising (training) your liver?”

“Seonbae, hear me out for a bit, please, the last time….”

“Who’s your seonbae!!”

He knew that guy would yell. Jaeyoon shut his eyes tightly and lamented Sieon’s cold heart that wouldn’t spare even a beauty. He didn’t have even an inch of forgiveness for that pitiful-looking woman. It was even someone who said they liked him….

But Jaeyoon was in no place to intervene – he’d made the mistake of opening the door to just anyone – and his primary concern was weathering the storm that would come later.

Sieon felt his brain cells burning with a crackling sound. He’d returned from doing office work because of the phone call from the security guard. Anxious, they informed him in advance that it seemed like the young lady from before had come again. Sure enough, not only did Inyoung visit the villa as the guard had spotted, but she was even sitting in the living room and drinking tea. I should’ve kept that idiot locked up, Sieon regretted.

“Seonbae, please, accept my heart. I said I loved you.”

It was so direct that it even made Jaeyoon’s face flush.

“Bullshit.”

But the man’s reaction was cold enough to freeze the Arctic glacier, which was melting from ozone depletion. Jaeyoon rubbed his forearm without even realizing. He prayed he wouldn’t touch the woman, but with this man as the opponent, it might be of no use.

“I made a mistake before because I was so desperate. Seonbae, why… why don’t you understand people’s hearts?”

“Oh, I definitely should have killed you, bitch. It wasn’t even enough for you to have my house covered in blood.”

When the word ‘blood’ came out of the man with a cruel smile, Jaeyoon opened his eyes.

Soon, fearing the experience of witnessing a murder scene, he came to stand between the two people. Inyoung was behind him as if he was protecting her, but his heart was pounding and his legs were trembling. At Jaeyoon’s interference, Sieon’s forehead furrowed deeply. The man strode over and came up to his nose.

“Maybe I should take this opportunity to get rid of both of you.”

Jaeyoon swallowed his saliva.

“My-my-my mom kno-knows I’m here.”

The corners of Sieon’s mouth went up.

“What about it?”

“So… since my mo-mom knows- kuek!!!!”

Jaeyoon, who wanted to confidently say ‘there’s someone who knows where I am, so you can’t just do whatever you want with me’, fell forward from the impact against his back and gave an unsightly scream.

“Hey, you!!!!!”

Sieon’s roar was delivered to his face through the vibrations in his chest.

Jaeyoon’s eyeballs rolled while trying to calm down his anxious heart.

The man gave him a sense of fear by not sitting down and instead pacing back and forth and chain smoking stiffly, turning the house into a raccoon’s cave.

A little while ago, Jaeyoon, who’d shown chivalry and tried to help Inyoung out, had crashed into Sieon’s chest after being pushed by her. In the commotion, Sieon missed the damn woman running away. Shortly after, he couldn’t even pursue Inyoung because of the guard that came to check the situation and ask if they were okay.

Inyoung was a different kind of woman than Jaeyoon thought. She was a stalker who’d followed Sieon to his house, though he hadn’t told her about it. Jaeyoon’s breath caught when he heard the guard mumble about how, just the week before, she’d snuck into the house and attempted to commit suicide, saying ‘Sieon doesn’t know how I feel’ and making the living room a soaking mess with blood. She was an experienced person. What’s more, that suicide attempt was a complete show; she’d obtained the blood from somewhere and put a play all on her own, so whatever her feelings were, from the landlord’s – who had to suddenly throw out all his living room furniture – point of view, he was determined to kill her if she showed up again.

The fact that he let such an opponent into the house made Jaeyoon feel dizzy.

She looked normal… You can’t know the human mind, thought the 18-year-old boy. No, it’s just that birds of a feather flock together. Maybe they were of the same breed, Jaeyoon dared to think so in front of the man who’d teach him a lesson if he knew what was going on in his mind.

“Cough….”

He tried to hold it back but still let out a cough, so Jaeyoon opened his eyes roundly and covered his mouth. At the sound, Sieon stopped pacing and took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket to smoke again.

Really, he was a guy who was tiring in many ways. Covering his mouth when he’d already let the cough out and his face going red when he was just barely suppressing it. What to do with this moron? If he kept causing trouble, the tired one here would be Sieon. Nevertheless, that beady-eyed expression suggesting he knew nothing was annoying.

Suddenly, Sieon remembered the kid’s suggestion from before he went out.

“Weakness….”

“Yes?!!”

Stop freaking out. This idiot was hurriedly shrinking his shoulders, foolishly rolling his eyes and biting his lips. Seeing his lips were starting to turn red with teeth marks, Sieon came up with a sure method.

“That exchange, let’s try it.”

“Yes?”

Before Jaeyoon could think what he meant, he was grabbed and dragged away. The place he was thrown with a plop was a soft mattress.

“????-”

“Undress.”

Jaeyoon couldn’t understand what he, who was untying his necktie, was saying. When he looked around the room he had entered for the first time, he just realized it was Sieon’s bedroom. When he undid the button at his neck, he instinctively crept back, fearing what other punishment this unpredictable man would resort to, besides strangling and locking him up.

“Let’s do it, the exchange.”

“Ah!!”

When Jaeyoon’s face returned color thinking he was finally getting freed, Sieon smiled slightly.

“Then, what should we do it with? Come to think of it, the sort of thing that others don’t know about– Why-why are you doing this?!!”

Jaeyoon shouted urgently when Sieon suddenly climbed up and grabbed his shoulders.

“Let’s make a secret that you definitely can’t tell others about.”

As he approached with a shark-like smile, Jaeyoon struggled on the bed, flapping about like a fish just stranded ashore. However, when Sieon, who had sufficient ability to subdue others, pressed Jaeyoon down in a few moves, the latter’s face bleached to the point where it could not be any whiter.

“I-I-I’m a man.”

“What about that?”

The answer was ‘what does it matter’. It was too plain a voice.

He had known from before that common sense doesn’t work on him at all, but it felt like he was completely out of his mind now. Sieon put his hand inside Jaeyoon’s clothes and quickly lifted his shirt.

He meant it, he really meant it! The man seemed to have thought up the [sure secret he can’t say to anyone else]. Jaeyoon wanted to cry. In fact, tears welled up.

“You-You do these kinds of things with the person you’re dating!”

“And so?”

“With a person you’re dating… you do this with a lover!!”

When he shouted as if he was on the verge of crying, Sieon suppressed a laugh. If anyone who knew him saw him now, the astonishment of that epoch-making tender smile would cause them to shout to the ends of the Earth or retreat 500 meters back. Jaeyoon, however, who was actually caught in this historical moment, didn’t have the leisure to care about his expression and was busy racking his brains for a way to avoid this crisis. Seizing the chance when the other stopped his actions of undressing him, he struggled, but the strength of the man’s grip was no joke.

“So we can just date then.”

“……?”

I beg your pardon?1

Blink, blink. As soon as he blankly blinked, the tears that were in his eyes rolled down his cheeks.

“Excuse me?”

“…….”

As Sieon’s hand tried to move again, Jaeyoon grabbed it tightly, looking straight at Sieon’s face for the first time.

Did he say to date just now? Was it that? Did I hear that right?

“… My mom will scold me.”

“Ha!”

“If I date a man, I think… I’ll really get scolded.”

“Exchange established.”

Sieon pulled up the corners of his mouth into a seemingly satisfied smile. Jaeyoon felt a chill gradually rising. Since you couldn’t tell just anyone that you were dating a man, it meant that he’d accepted Jaeyoon’s [a weakness for a weakness] proposal. When Sieon’s hand deviously came down to his pants, Jaeyoon urgently shouted again.

“You could just get over it instead!!!”

Jaeyoon was also out of his mind now, not even knowing what he was saying.

“You can just overcome stuff like cola. If you keep drinking it, you’ll become resistant, or just make it so it can’t get anywhere close to you, ban imports, or destroy the factory!!”

“Then will you do it?”

“Eh?”

“Get rid of that terrible poison from this world.”

It was like ‘justice’ delivered to the Warrior of Earth who wants to punish the evil forces.

“What?”

“Drink all of that damn poison and get rid of it.”

“Heop!”

“Date me. Or drink it?”

When he saw the cruel smile emerging on Sieon’s face, Jaeyoon foresaw a defeat.

“… Ah… Ouch….”

“I haven’t touched you yet.”

Sieon was slowly getting angry. Why are you acting like such a crybaby when I’m being this careful?

However, no matter how Sieon felt, in the face of the imminent crisis Jaeyoon’s mind seemed to have burned blank. Dexterously, the shirt fell under the bed, and the pants and underwear were pulled down. With Sieon’s figure in full view, he turned his head back and forth not knowing where to put his eyes, his head spinning with dizziness. His face heated up, feeling as if it was burning. Tears were ready to burst out anytime. When a big hand came between his legs, Jaeyoon’s eyes grew in size so much so they were ready to pop.

“Wai… Wait.”

“What now?”

That Sieon barely held on to his patience, Jaeyoon couldn’t know. How much he was enduring – although he didn’t spare the effort to peel off his clothes personally, this mugwort2 with zero dating experience shouted ‘wait’ with a frightened face whenever Sieon did something.

“I’m… a minor….”

“…….”

Yes, yes, it means nothing, right. I guess this kind of problem means nothing at all.

At his slightly frowning face, Jaeyoon closed his eyes as if he was sending even the last of his hope over the Jordan river.

What kind of common sense would work with a man who wanted to sleep with a man to catch the other’s weakness so he could protect his own secret? For Jaeyoon who didn’t want to be violated by a man, this could only be an unfair crisis, a hardship, and the ordeal of a lifetime.

“Heok!!”

He stopped breathing when an unfamiliar thing came into the part he had not even touched with his own hands.

As the pain beyond one’s imagination came, his vision turned white and the cells all over his body throbbed and screamed.

He was just breathing out and didn’t make any sounds with his gaping mouth.

Absent-minded for a while after opening his eyes, Jaeyoon soon realized that he had lost consciousness. He lay alone on the wide bed. When he felt the sharp pain between his hips, Jaeyoon buried his face into the pillow.

He’d been violated.

He was rather thankful for having lost consciousness and not being able to remember it, but the fact that he’d been shockingly violated by a man didn’t change and made Jaeyoon want to cry. He shouldn’t have felt a flutter that night. He shouldn’t have admired him for being so handsome. Heaven was also thoughtless; why give that sort of face to someone of that substance? Jaeyoon hugged the pillow and struggled.

“Not getting up?”

Not knowing since when he’d been watching, he heard the voice of the man he didn’t really want to see right now. As his struggling motions suddenly stiffened into the position of a prostrate frog, Sieon, who had been watching for a while, smirked without a sound.

I can totally see what this idiot is thinking. It was obvious he was regretting having been violated. It became interesting for some reason, so Sieon decided not to tell the truth.

Whenever he put his hand on the frightened fellow, he flinched like a rabbit in front of a tiger. A fellow with a pale and thin body and zero experience on the topic – it was normal not to have experience at that age, but it didn’t get through to Sieon – had fallen asleep even before it started. He’d thought of pouring water on him or just going through with it like that, but after a while, the guy even started snoring. He’d obviously fallen into a deep sleep, which dumbfounded Sieon. He was dying to say, ‘Just you try waking up’ , but when he did actually wake up, he floundered into the sea of delusions all on his own.

“Not going home?”

He asked again – it was more of a command than an enquiry – but to him, it was a very kind question.

“… going.”

From the moment he knew Sieon was in the same room, Jaeyoon, whose whole body went beetroot red, was unable to even lift his face, so he muttered in a faint voice. It looked like a caterpillar wriggling inside the sheets.

“I saw it all already, so what’re you hiding?”

“!!!-”

Indeed, he was a fun guy to tease. After pausing for a bit, he started wriggling again and groping for clothes. Sieon, who was still watching, went out of the room regretfully when his cell phone rang.

Jaeyoon was hypersensitive to his every sound, so, right after Sieon left, he jumped out, picked up some clothes and hurriedly started putting them on. In Jaeyoon’s head, the thought of wanting to get out of this situation as soon as possible dominated. After dressing up in a jiffy, he turned and saw Sieon standing at the bedroom door, causing him to scream ‘Keuheok!’ out loud. He felt like a debtor caught by his creditor after having run off.

“I’ll take you home.”

“N-No need, there’s still a bus, I-I can go alone.”

Evasive, Jaeyoon stuttered that he’d use the bus which ran close to midnight.

“It’s okay between lovers. You’re also not feeling well, right?”

“!!!”

“I have to go out anyway, so I’ll drop you off on the way.”

The enormous generosity, which would make his friends fall over if they witnessed it, came as an ordeal to Jaeyoon. The phrases ‘lovers’ or ‘not feeling well’ which were deliberately stressed were words he never wanted to hear. When he heard them, his until-then perfectly fine body suddenly felt like it wasn’t. He just wanted to plop down and cry ‘uwang~’ like a child, but fortunately his typical South Korean male pride prevented at least that much.

On the whole way home, both of them were silent. Sieon sped madly down the road in the dead of night, and Jaeyoon held his seat belt tightly, just staring out the window.

When the car pulled over in front of the familiar alley, Jaeyoon bowed and tried to get off.

“Hey.”

“Yes-yes!!!”

Jaeyoon’s shoulders tensed up. His body was pulled with a jerk and he gave a groan of pain. His heart leapt at the lips that soon covered Jaeyoon’s as if they wanted to swallow them.

“!!!!-”

TN:

1) I beg your pardon? – was in English in the raws

2) mugwort – The specific Korean word means someone who has no dating experience, ie. is green at dating, but it’s meant in an offensive way.

An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.

At the entrance of the villa, Jaeyoon recalled what Yoonjae had told him.

“Good, a weakness for a weakness!!!”

Jaeyoon arrived on time, only to be greeted by Sieon, who didn’t even look at his face and pointed straight at the interrogation-like room. It seemed like he was dressed to go out again. He stroked Soonson, who skipped over, wagging its tail, and scrutinized Sieon. The man raised his eyebrows seeing Jaeyoon not going in immediately and just standing there. Thinking that day really must have been a dream, Jaeyoon decided to forget the ‘innocent sheep’ Sieon.

“Excuse me, teacher.”

“Who’s your teacher?”

“… Then what should I call you?”

“Is there a need for that?”

“Of-of course, there is.”

His mouth hardly having opened, Jaeyoon once again placated himself. If things went on like this, it seemed like not only would he ruin the test, but he’d also ruin himself.

“I-I’ve… found out about that weakness.”

“What weakness?!!”

When he suddenly shouted, Jaeyoon was startled and bit his tongue.

“!!!!-“

Sieon clicked his tongue. Where did this idiot roll in from to give me a headache? He felt like throwing him off the veranda. Look at this, he’s waddling into the bathroom.

When Jaeyoon stuck his tongue out in front of the mirror, he struggled to endure the pain of his bitten tongue and groaned.

“Are you a twat?”

“Euu….”

When Jaeyoon came out, wiping away the tears from his eyes, Sieon sent him a look to quickly go in. Once Jaeyoon recalled yesterday’s nightmare, he tightly grabbed the bathroom door and wildly shook his head.

“You do all sorts of things.”

“…….”

“Go in obediently before I peel you off the door and throw you in. Okay?”

Struggling with his burning tongue, Jaeyoon racked his brain for a way to avoid it. Sieon clicked his tongue, thinking him pathetic.

As he savoured the steamy coffee smell, Sieon frowned in dislike, wondering why he should be listening to the words of such a moron. Though his speech was usually slow and inarticulate, he was stuttering more now, perhaps because he had bitten his tongue.

“That’s it. I found out about the embarrassing situation, so… you told me not to get caught by the enemy.”

Jaeyoon eagerly spoke while keeping an eye on Sieon’s expression, which grew grimmer as time went by.

“I mean, if that… side finds out about my weakness, then, what was it, we will be even. There’s no reason to waste time like this.”

This was the only hope for Jaeyoon. He figured that if they had weaknesses on each other, Sieon wouldn’t have a reason to appear, and Jaeyoon would be able to concentrate on studying with a peaceful heart. Jaeyoon hadn’t planned on saying anything in the first place – even though no one would believe him even if he did – but it would be better to give this handicap to this person who doesn’t trust him.

“What’s the point in me knowing your weakness?”

“That… I mean, an eye for an eye, and tooth for a tooth, a weakness for a weakness. I also have to study, and that… you’re also busy, hyung.”

“Sure I’m busy, but I can just leave you in this house and go out. Is there reason for me to learn about you?”

He had forgotten he was such a person.

But Jaeyoon tried to carry on the negotiations patiently. On the surface, it looked similar to a deeply-in-debt person asking a loan shark to postpone the collection date and a creditor coldly refusing; and, of all people, it had to be Sieon’s weakness he had found out about, a weakness the other didn’t want anyone to know of.

Sieon just stared at his cousin’s friend, who was obviously shaking. Even the gaze of that dense fellow gave off the impression that he’d gotten caught up in something bad.

“…… You don’t have to keep a close watch on me or concern yourself with me, and I can also devote myself to my studies with an easy mind. I really didn’t have any other intentions, you don’t have to get angry… that… why don’t we end it with this exchange?”

He might not be as dumb as he appears, saying what he wants to say despite stuttering. Sieon took a sip of the coffee and thought about the fellow’s suggestion. It wasn’t bad. But he didn’t like it.

“What are the annoying things you don’t want others to know?”

When Sieon opened his mouth, Jaeyoon’s face brightened as if hope had arisen. It strangely got on his nerves.

“I can’t drink!!”

“Just-“

“I have no athleticism either!”

Just as Sieon clicked his tongue, he quickly cut his words off and added.

“I have bad handwriting.”

He’s really something. He stayed still, wondering how much he would talk – if he’d had dog ears, they’d both be raised – while the other was muttering in an increasingly faint voice.

“I’m also short.”

“…….”

“I can’t sing either.”

“…….”

“I only have one double eyelid1….”

“…….”

“I’m not good at math, either.”

“…….”

“Ah! I have an allergy to cat’s fur.”

“Are you introducing yourself?”

“…….”

Jaeyoon sat in the small room, only flipping the book pages. He tried erasing the situation from a little while ago from his mind, but it was slowly coming back and tormenting him. Ugh~ A self-disparaging cry came out automatically. How could he not have any significant weakness? No, he had plenty, but all were below Sieon’s standards. No, there was too big of a gap with that man’s secret. From his point of view, they were all weaknesses, but it felt like he was shrinking while saying them aloud. It wasn’t even self-abuse time; it isn’t easy to admit what you’re lacking on your own. However, his sincere heart had been rejected at once without a spare glance.

Complaining about him wasting time on useless things, Sieon left without beating up(?)2 Jaeyoon, as if he was running really late. He’d even shown generosity today and hadn’t locked the door. Although the reason was ‘I don’t want my house to be dirtied because of a dunce’, Jaeyoon, who was grateful for it, tasted bitter despair and felt like he was becoming stranger and stranger.

“He is so handsome, so why is his personality…”

… so wicked… Timid Ha Jaeyoon couldn’t even utter such words.

Now that he thought about it, it seemed like he understood why the man didn’t have even a single nickname and could only be called by his real name, despite all the rumours. Such an abnormal personality couldn’t really be called anything. After having experienced Sieon for a few days, his feelings boiled down to,

“Do you think the world is fair?”

Although he had a personality so odd it made you want to scream until you passed out, on the surface he gave off a different impression. As if he’d just popped out of the TV, he had a chiseled face and was so tall and cool, that even another man like himself would feel envious. But if he got caught staring agape at the man, he felt Sieon would probably see it as Jaeyoon trying to pick a fight. Of course, the aftermath would be terrifying.

“Still, he’s quite handsome.”

Jaeyoon involuntarily mumbled, recalling Sieon’s appearance from when he’d gone out just a moment ago. Then he looked around in astonishment at what he had just said.

I’m crazy, crazy, crazy.

When his face suddenly heated up, Jaeyoon thought he should at least wash it and came out. Hearing a scratching sound, he looked around and saw Soonsoon scratching and groaning at the front door. Since the dog, which had good potty training and only used the veranda as his toilet, just kept staring at the front door, he wondered if its owner had returned. He opened the door, only to find an unfamiliar woman who, when seeing him, looked surprised.

“Who are you?”

“…Who are you?”

They asked each other at the same time.

 “This here… Isn’t it Sieon-seonbae’s house?”

As she was checking the house number, the woman scrutinized Jaeyoon with suspicious eyes.

“… He went out, he isn’t here.”

“Ah… you’re his dongsaeng3. I heard he had a cousin.”

As if relieved, the woman with long, straight hair came in through the front door, smiling brightly. The reason why he couldn’t stop the woman was that she seemed to know Sieon well. He worried that he’d done something useless, but the woman gave of a well-dressed and classy appearance, so he didn’t consider her suspicious. Moreover, it was clear from her words that they had a ‘seonbae-hoobae4 relationship.

“Ah, he still has this dog.”

Seeing the act of pretending to know and petting Soonsoon, Jaeyoon undoubtedly trusted this visitor.

“You don’t resemble your hyung at all, are you a high school senior?”

“Ah, yes… But I’m n-”

“Can I have a cup of tea?”

“Yes.”

He really wanted to say, ‘I’m his cousin’s friend’ and strongly deny the blood ties she was mistaken about – although, he knew his real cousin, Yoonjae, would also feel the same – but when the guest had confidently made her demand, he answered her politely and moved to the kitchen.

Jaeyoon, who was about to use the silver sink but pulled back unsure whether he could touch it or not, looked around. Unlike the dreary living room, the kitchen was clean and neat, and he hesitated to touch anything, wondering if that person even had any tea. After opening one or two cupboards, he found there was no such thing as green tea, only coffee, the instant type. Feeling like he’d get scolded if he took it, he said he was going to the supermarket and ran out. Since he had to self-teach(torture), he couldn’t even turn one page of his workbook, so he felt pathetic now, wondering why he was entertaining some guest.

The woman drank gracefully, as if the instant coffee were some high-quality coffee beans. He would have to make up for the entire amount of today’s study after he returned, but as he couldn’t just leave the guest unattended, Jaeyoon only dawdled.

“Ah, right. My name is Seo Inyoung and I’m Sieon-seonbae’s junior.”

“I’m Ha Jaeyoon.”

Exchanging greetings without hesitation, Inyoung smiled pleasantly.

“Jaeyoon-ssi, you’re really cute. I can’t believe you’re seonbae’s younger cousin.”

Ha Jaeyoon, 18, a man already this old but he’d actually been called ‘cute’ by a woman. He wasn’t sure if he should feel happy with this awkward compliment. What should I say to keep the conversation going with a person I’ve met for the first time? Jaeyoon, whose shy personality – especially in front of a beauty – was on full display, couldn’t find the right words. Mercifully, Inyoung seemed to possess a friendly personality, and thanks to Soonsoon, who was rolling around below and acting cute, the atmosphere was somehow moving along.

“You’ve probably gathered as much already, but I like Sieon-seonbae. When I saw him on the day of school admission, I fell for him at first sight.”

When Inyoung shyly confessed, Jaeyoon, who didn’t even expect there’d be aliens who’d fall for such a person – never mind being quick-witted! -, was greatly shocked. His jaw hit the ground automatically.

“How is Sieon-seonbae from Jaeyoon-ssi’s view?”

“Yes?”

“That person is a bit… odd. That is also a charm, of seonbae’s.”

Such mercifulness even when choosing her words… Her heart was as kind as if she’d volunteered at a refugee camp in Africa for several years.

“In the eyes of a cousin, seonbae doesn’t have any lover or anything, right?”

“…….”

From the way Inyoung was looking at him, expectantly and batting her eyelashes, he felt a silent, oppressive pressure to say he doesn’t.

“Yes?”

“Pro… bably…”

His character was an impossible one. If he had a lover, then she was either truly a saint like Mother Teresa or an alien; if not, then it would have to be a human who was in the same league, he concluded. However, if he yapped about things he was unsure of, he was afraid of the consequences coming back to bite him, so he mixed in some uncertainty. Inyoung was greatly pleased even with that. Jaeyoon sincerely thought it was a shame. Unconsciously, he grabbed Inyoung’s hand and prayed earnestly.

 “!!-”

“I-I beg you.”

Please, save that evil person with [the power of love]!!!

Frankly, it didn’t seem like Sieon would get won over any time soon, but he didn’t doubt that this person, with an understanding as vast and deep as the sea, would be able to lead him to the path of light. Doesn’t she already know about Sieon? But she’s still so single-mindedly devoted!! He even seemed to see the illusion of a halo subtly shining around Inyoung’s head.

“What’re you doing with this crazy girl?”

Then they heard the sinister voice.

“Seon-seonbae-nim.”

Inyoung’s voice, which was oozing with gentleness, trembled. Thinking she was nervous, Jaeyoon felt sorry for her. Well, who wouldn’t be nervous in front of that man?

Sieon seemed to have returned from his outing and stood at the entrance, looking down at the two people. Telling at a glance that he was in the worst possible mood, Jaeyoon tried to calm his pounding heart. Soonsoon, who always welcomed its owner, had noticed it first and fled the room. Trying to imitate the behaviour of the experienced dog, he averted his eyes and got off his butt, wanting to go back to the room and pretend he didn’t have a clue what was going on, but the evil voice arrested Jaeyoon’s feet.

TN:

1) double eyelid – Yet another Korean indication of beauty. Double eyelids are not very common whence it’s seen as something prettier?

2) beating up(?) – Was in the original text, it just means JY (author) isn’t sure about the word even if it’s right, it’s common in Korean variety shows in captions, take it as a quirk (idk if it’s used anywhere else so yeah), also I’ll be indicating it like this from now on so take notice now as I won’t explain it anymore ^^

3) dongsaeng – Younger sibling if related by blood, generally is just a title you call someone younger than you who’s an acquaintance that you’re on a friendly terms/close with.

4) seonbae-hoobae – senior-junior

(Still looking for TLC if you’re interested ^^)

I’m SO sorry for taking so long again, I don’t really have much of an excuse this time, I was just preoccupied with SHINee/J.DON comeback for two weeks, I’m sorryy~ ^^;; Also just a heads up, I think this chapter is gonna be split to 4/5 parts

Unrelated but I think next time I’ll pick up a project I’ll just translate ahead before posting so I can actually stick to a somewhat of a consistent schedule lol, again I’m really sorry I’m such a lazy prick xDD

2. Date me or Drink

“…… I was just going to leave after getting the mock exam grades. The teacher held up my friend, you know Youngsoo, right? You saw him that time, he’s a little short and his hair is sporty.”

Jaeyoon’s words stopped here for a moment and he looked at the person sitting opposite him. Although he was unable to know if the other was listening given his dull, expressionless face, the stare in his eyes told him to keep going. Jaeyoon swallowed his saliva once, directed his gaze down to the note and began to prattle again.

Although he’d finished reporting what had happened during the day, since Jaeyoon had nowhere to direct his sigh to, he fidgeted with the ends of the note. He hadn’t done something like this even in elementary school, but whenever he met Sieon the first thing he did was take out his note, and fluently talk about everything he had done during the day.

“Youngsoo has been failing since March. Since my homeroom teacher wanted to have a talk, Youngsoo asked me to wait… that’s why I was late. … On the way I had some ramyeon1.”

After adding the reason for being 30 minutes late, there was nothing more to say. As the one in front of him wasn’t saying anything, Jaeyoon grew anxious.

As he noted down in the report diary, Jaeyoon himself also keenly felt how boring every day was for a normal high school senior, whose CSATs were just around the corner.

The notes were full of what he studied at what time, what words he’d studied at what time. He kept wondering why he was writing this.

A moist nose nudged Jaeyoon’s hand. It was a four-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Soonsoon2; unbelievably, it was a dog Sieon was raising.

“Are you bored, should I play with you?”

Its ears covered with curly fur pricked up at the word play, then it quickly ran to pick up the ball.

Jaeyoon, who had never raised a dog before, couldn’t have been more amazed to see a dog pick a ball with such cheerful steps.

“Are you here to play?”

The silent Sieon finally opened his mouth. The actions of both the dog that handed over the ball and Jaeyoon who was going to take it came to a halt. Its behaviour was truly befitting of a dog Sieon was raising.

As soon as the owner’s voice fell, it laid on its stomach and only moved its tail gently, reading the situation. Jaeyoon was seized by subtle emotions as his and Soonsoon’s images seemed to overlap.

“Don’t make me say it twice.”

“Ah, I won’t.”

“Study.”

“Ah, yes.”

Like a soldier under orders, Jaeyoon’s movements of opening his bag and taking out the workbook were precise.

Taking a private lesson for the first time ever, Jaeyoon was feeling slight excitement, so he’d even marked the problems he couldn’t solve.

As he hesitated on where to open the book, Sieon’s gaze pointed to the door on the right.

Even before the aftermath of his parents’ declaration that he was suddenly going to get private lessons could fade away, Jaeyoon had received a text message.

[We’ll do it at my house.]

He couldn’t even fight the other’s grandiose manner of making the examinee, who was pressed for time, come and go.

It was better than Sieon coming to his house. Jaeyoon, who thought he at least wanted to feel comfortable at home, only wished Sieon didn’t live alone.

The expectation that he at least wouldn’t be killed ended in foolishness, as he hadn’t thought of Sieon’s character.

In the large villa were only the one who ‘becomes a gentle sheep when he gets drunk on cola’ and a dog with curly fur.

When he asked about his parents, he only received a cynical answer: ‘Do I look like some fool who can’t even become independent at this age?’

Except for the living room which had a carpet, the rest gave off a chilly and cold atmosphere, resembling him. After opening the door, only a desk and a chair were in the middle of the room, and only a stand lamp was set there, so if the wallpaper had been grey or dark blue, it would be brutal enough to remind you of an interrogation room.

He had expected it but didn’t know it’d be this chilly…. In wonder, ‘Really, here?’, he asked filled with doubts,

“It was hard to get it.”

Saying so, he felt unspoken pressure. That if he didn’t like it, he would get killed. Jaeyoon, without even realizing, looked at Soonsoon, who was chewing on a dog gum.

The gentle eyes he met seemed to be saying to cheer up.

Jaeyoon, who was concentrating on the problems after entering the room, stealthily got up since, no matter how long he waited, his tutor didn’t come in.

Although he was a scary opponent, since he’d volunteered to tutor him, Jaeyoon had also brought along all the mock tests he’d taken since March, thinking he ought to show some sincerity.

He should at least know what his grades were, so the other could determine the level he needed to teach at.

He carefully grasped the door knob. But it didn’t turn.

“Oh?”

But as it was not budging even after he turned it the other way, he tugged on the knob and knocked on the door.

“Ex… Excuse me… Teacher!!!”

He was a bit conflicted by the ambiguous title. It couldn’t be considered an appropriate title for him. After a few minutes of knocking on the door and hoping the other would show up, Sieon opened the door and appeared, his forehead wrinkled. Unlike earlier, he was wearing a black jacket and seemed to be going out.

“What! Are you intending to destroy my house!?”

“The door was locked…”

“…….”

“I-I couldn’t figure out some problems.”

“…….”

“Thi-This. I’m not really sure how to draw the graph here. The solution is also weird, I’ve thought about it at school, too, is the question perhaps wrong?”

“Are you an idiot?”

He was asking because he didn’t know, but this was the reply he got back.

“Why should I teach you?”

“What?”

“It’s your studying, so take care of it yourself. You’ve got a table and chair in the study room, what else would you want, huh?”

“Ehh?”

He poked the dazed Jaehyun’s forehead and smiled that courteous vulgar smile.

In Sieon’s eyes, how could this silly friend of his cousin be this ignorant of the world. He thought it’d be fun to watch how this fool’s round eyes3 and pale white face who said whatever was on his mind without thinking crumpled.

“Why do I, for someone like you, need to go to the lengths of doing some nonsense tutoring, and on top of that, for free?”

Having a sudden sense of foreboding, Jaeyoon took a step back.

“It doesn’t seem like it, but could you possibly not even have any brain cells? It would be over if I sewed your mouth shut, but this damned civilization will somehow get you to communicate anyway, right? If I cut off your hands, then you’re left with your feet, and if those get cut off, then you’d be left with your body. It would be the end if I got rid of you without a word, but you also don’t want that, do you? Be grateful when I let you live although you’re testing my patience, ok?”

The last remaining speck of expectations seemed to fly away, too. Being stunned into silence was probably an exact description of this situation. For the first time ever, Jaeyoon experienced the feeling of blood instantly leaving his body. His head went blank.

“If you obediently stay here, I’ll send you home later.”

Jaeyoon got goosebumps at this display of “generosity”, feeling it was like the postponement of a death-row convict’s execution from tomorrow to two days later. Finishing his words and affectionately patting his head, Sieon mercilessly shut the door and locked it.

Along with the thud, Jaeyoon’s eyes also dimmed.

“Isn’t this bastard overdoing it? Are you going to Harvard?”

“Could you be sleeping with eyes open?”

Jaeyoon usually slept a lot. He slept so much that it was a wonder he managed to keep his grades up. When he became a senior, he did decrease the amount, but he still dozed off a couple of hours a day. When Jaeyoon kept his eyes open during 5th and also 6th period, everyone had to pitch a few words in.

“Ha Jaeyoon, since you’re keeping your eyes open even until this time, I’m getting nervous.”

Jaeyoon, who raised his head at Yoonjae’s voice, wanted to burst into tears. He was frustrated because he couldn’t even vent his pent-up feelings to anyone.

Yesterday, he was locked in that small room for about 5 hours and all he did was solve problems from the workbook. When he wanted to go to the toilet, it seemed like the owner had gone out, because no matter how much he shouted the door didn’t open and only the sound of Soonsoon barking on the other side could be heard. It was so urgent, he even considered opening the window and jumping out, but gave up when the reality that he was on the 6th floor hit him. He also considered just doing his business out the window but convinced himself not to, thinking ‘what if it landed on passers-by, it would be a real disaster’. Hoping that Soonsoon could eventually scratch a hole through the door, he kept calling its name.

A critical situation came later, when he wasn’t even able to think properly anymore; he could only lie on the desk, unable to think of studying or anything else. Was it better to bear it like this and die, or would it be better to just do it and die from embarrassment later? Complicated thoughts dominated his brain.

Unaware of the crisis being fought in the house, the heartless owner returned after finishing his business, only to be met with the pathetic sight of Jaeyoon’s back, who sprinted towards the bathroom with a deathly pale face as soon as the door was opened. He was sad, hungry, and wronged… anyway, it was like that.

He could only blame his naïve self for not having any doubts when he had suddenly been offered private tutoring. He’d assumed Sieon had just found the best method to monitor a high school senior, but he hadn’t suspected the man had had no intention of tutoring him from the start. He had completely overlooked Yoonjae’s usual remarks of wanting to deny the very existence of his heartless cousin.

“In fact-“

“In fact?”

He really wanted to spill the beans. He wanted to go behind the mountain and shout, ‘The king’s got donkey ears!’ He desperately wanted to beg, ‘Go talk to your uncle and get rid of that horrible cousin!!!’

Jaeyoon sighed loudly and hung his head.

“Jaeyoon, if you aren’t feeling well, take a day off.”

“It’s all because the 100 days party was ruined. The Devil got you, the Devil.”

As if he was still bummed about that day, Youngsoo frowned. After being grilled by Jihye and his parents, Yoonjae didn’t look that carefree either. However, nobody knew. The one who had suffered the most damage was neither Yoongjae nor Youngsoo, but Jaeyoon himself. The naïve and kindhearted one had accidentally provoked the wolf in sheep’s clothing and had his week ruined. He was anxious, not knowing what would happen in the future.

“Uhm, what kind of person is your cousin?”

“Eh?”

At the unexpected question, Yoonjae sharply raised his eyes. He didn’t want to think about that human being in this peaceful moment of eating and digesting dinner, but when he saw the word ‘sorrow’ in the questioner’s eyes, he drained the coffee cup he was holding in one gulp.

“Is that a question? You know it from the rumours already. Do not approach.”

“Hyuu-“

“Could the reason why you’re not feeling well recently-”

“No, it’s not!”

“Then why ask?”

Come to think of it, didn’t he also ask me last time if I gave him his number? He hadn’t paid much attention to it, but it was suspicious. Yoonjae scrutinized Jaeyoon.

“Why, did something happen that day? You were the only one awake. Did he say anything to you? Did that bastard take it out on you? That wicked hyung’s every word is filled with malice, so let it go in one ear and out the other. Forget them all.”

Even if he wanted to forget, it was difficult when the person continued to appear. It had now reached the point where he thought he may have dreamed of that night when Sieon was so obedient. He was so desperate that he thought it would be better if all of this was just a dream and when he opened his eyes, he’d find himself inside the exam room.

“Would he have lived on his own since high school if it wasn’t so bad? My uncle also raised both his hands and feet in surrender.”

Yoonjae, who didn’t gossip about others, looked far off and searched his memory.

“He’s been famous since he was a kid. His behaviour is like that of a psychopath. He once got bitten by a dog while walking on the street. The owner of the dog apologized and took him to a hospital to get treated, and the conversation ended on a nice note. But do you know what that bastard did once his bandage was taken off? He waited on the dog’s walking route and threw an egg.”

Thinking ‘That’s it?’, Jaeyoon saw it as a normal type of revenge for a kid that age. Having experienced a more vicious side of Sieon’s character, Jaeyoon uncomfortably thought it wasn’t like him to just finish it with throwing eggs.

“Psst, you have no idea.”

Reading the thoughts written all over Jaeyoon’s face, Yoonjae raised a finger and waved it to dispel those complacent ideas.

“If you throw a raw egg, it goes ‘puck’ and that’s the end, but did you know? If you microwave an egg, it explodes. It’s okay if they explode when you do, but some don’t.”

“Really?”

“Those kinds of eggs are more dangerous. When you throw them, it’s like a small explosion on impact. He made five or six of these and threw them at the dog.”

“Heok!”

Jaeyoon breathed in. It was worse than fireworks; Yoonjae put on a bitter smile.

“Normally you don’t even throw firecrackers, but he went as far as creating something like a fireworks display in retaliation. I heard from my aunt that the dog was so shocked over the incident that it even refused to take walks after.”

“But he has a dog-!”

“Eh?”

“No, so he hates dogs?”

“Of course. That scum doesn’t see them as anything other than crawling ants. After all, he even hates humans, so what would you expect?”

Then what about Soonsoon that he keeps at home? Jaeyoon had yet another question.

“He’s basically a human that is faithful to the Code of Hammurabi.4 Even if he says something to you about that day, never show any reactions or approach him. Well, I’m sure you’re well aware of that with all the rumours going around.”

I’m sorry, my friend. It’s too late for that.I think I’ve already crossed the Rubicon River. 5

Jaeyoon looked at his friend, who was firmly advising him, with mournful eyes.

TN:

1) ramyeon – Instant noodles

2) Soonsoon – meaning obedient etc.

3) round eyes – innocent, like a baby’s round and innocent eyes, picture to visualize below

4) Code of Hammurabi – An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.) Even if he says something to you about that day, never show any reactions or approach him. Well, I’m sure you’re well aware of that with all the rumours going around.

5) crossed the Rubicon’s River – Past the point of no return. This high-level idiom comes from an event in ancient Roman history. In 49 BC, Julius Caesar’s army crossed the Rubicon River, an action that started the civil war which ultimately led him to become dictator and paved the way for the imperial era of Rome. It was forbidden for any army to cross the border river, so when Caesar’s army did, he knew he was doing something which would have important results that could not be changed later.

Top Secret – First Book (Intro)

Because of the nice weather, the streets were overflowing with couples. Jaeyoon unlocked his cell phone to check the time and quickened even more his already impatient steps.

“I’m sorry.”

It wasn’t easy to walk through a dense crowd. He courteously apologized to a woman who frowned at him as he had bumped into her and ran, it was already past 7:05 o’clock. As he began to see the gorgeously decorated department store’s tree, Jaeyoon started to look around the surroundings nervously and stopped at that certain place. He was tall, so he was easily seen even in the flood of crowd. And the crease engraved in the middle of his small face1, which could be clearly visible even from afar made his handsome face stand out even more. With the delusion that black smoke was rising behind him, Jaeyoon quickly hid himself inside the crowd and began to calm his petrified self. However, no matter how brave he tried to be, his legs trembled constantly and as he hesitated for a while, Jaeyoon was soon found out by the other’s sharp eyes.

“Idiot!!!”

“I’m sorry.”

An angry, heavily blaming voice struck the crowd like a lightning. And following that was Jaeyoon’s apology that came out instinctively.

“How dare you make me stand here!!!”

Before long, the man who came up to Jaeyoon’s nose snarled at him as if he would strangle him at any moment. The people around who had been sneaking a peek at his sculpture-like handsome face seemed to freeze at his words.

“I’m sorry.”

Jaeyoon apologized again in a trembling voice.

“You made me stand in this damn place with all sorts of things, wasting 6 minutes and 42 seconds of my life? You want to leave the world2 like this? Wanna get buried?”

He was angry as if he had been waiting for 6 hours and 42 minutes. Jaeyoon’s face paled. A few of the women who had been watching him also turned pale. With a heart yearning to be able to talk to him, their faces were filled with disappointment. Jaeyoon, who scanned the curious buzz of people stealing glances around them, closed his eyes with the thought of rather being killed right then and there.

“Cursed day where even fatso’s covered in blood are striding on the street. Ha Jaeyoon, you’re full of guts3 today, huh.”

It was a mistake to schedule it on this day from the start. It was another mistake to agree on this place. With a sigh of self-reproach, Jaeyoon furtively opened his tightly closed eyes again. When he saw a group of Santas attracting customers from one side of the department store’s entrance, Jaeyoon’s face darkened again.

Fatsos covered in blood.

Sieon was referring to Santa Clauses. It started a few years back because of a certain advertisement featuring Santa in winter when he began to call the ‘Santa grandfather,’ that is the world’s childrens’ dream, love and hope, by such a dreadful nickname without the slightest bit of hesitation. Recently, even a polar bear joined him as a man ran through the wind to the airport trying to stop him. Of course, with a hunting gun at his side.

“Quickly spit it out.”

“Eh?”

“If it’s a trivial reason, I’ll throw you to the eighth lane.4

Jaeyoon opened his eyes wide as even his hair stood up, the other being a man capable of doing just that and stammered out.

“Wha. What?”

“The reason you made me stand here.”

His gloomy voice contained the force of him being ready to grab Jaeyoon and throw him into the road at any time. Maybe because it was a nice day, he looked at the tortoise-like road, and was relieved for a moment, then Jaeyoon flinched at the other’s angry behaviour as the man was scarily approaching. It was a natural reaction to step back.

“If you don’t speak in 10 seconds, 7. 8 9”

Gives you 10 seconds but counts from 7.

“We, We’re dating.5

Jaeyoon who urgently cried out felt despair at Sieon’s poker-face.

“What about that?”

His shoulders drooped at his blasé voice. Jaeyoon couldn’t even imagine until recently that he’d get the chance to meet this man, who was shrouded in rumours like a celebrity would and was also his friend’s cousin, personally. And even less that they would have dated. The lover’s day, Christmas Eve. Whatever the occasion, he wanted to make an appointment on this special day. However, even though the streets were overflowing with couples, and the whole of Earth was excited about the festival of love, this man was snorting without a care in the world and exuded a bloody atmosphere. Your partner was your adversary after all.6 As soon as he entered junior high and senior high, all he heard were the scary legends of this handsome yet intimidating man. With the age difference of six years, he had never encountered him at school, but his story, which was old enough to be forgotten, was still living on, told from mouth to mouth, and accompanied by exaggeration, was becoming more frighteningly sublimated. (Even at this moment, it’ll be passed on to prospective freshmen who were scheduled to enter next March.) Yoonjae, his7 cousin and a long-time friend of Jaeyoon’s, denied the man’s entire existence, saying ‘It was a problem itself that my aunt even married my uncle in the first place.’

“That’s pretty daring, huh.8

Pretty daring? Repeating again Sieon’s words whose meaning he couldn’t quite understand, could Jaeyoon take these words as something positive? He held a faint hope. It seemed so, judging from the fact that his voice had gotten softer.

“I’m hungry.”

If this was the reaction, it was okay. When he started walking, Jaeyoon was relieved that he passed the first crisis.

“Of course, you’re going to pay for everything, right?”

Sieon, who was walking in front, turned around and smiled cruelly. Was this something a man, who was wrapped in designer clothes all over his body, should be saying to a senior high school student who has had just finished his college exams? At that moment, Jaeyoon sincerely cursed the day when he had found out this man’s top secret.

TN(ko-fi):

1) small face – Koreans are obsessed with people’s small faces and see it as an indication of one’s beauty.

2) leave this world – to die

3) full of guts – Literally translated as “to have a liver out of one’s stomach”, it’s a Korean saying used to make fun of, condemn or criticize someone who acts way too recklessly without fearing possible consequences.

4) eighth lane – Basically, South Korea has a wide range of x-lane roads and the eighth lane one has the fastest speed, I guess. Don’t quote me on this tho.

5) dating – Wow, I would have never guessed lmao

6) Your partner was your adversary. – Not completely sure about his one but hopefully it’s not wrong.

7) his cousin – Sieon’s if it’s not obvious.

8) daring, huh – Hmm, not entirely sure about this one, took a slight liberties with it, but the Korean is ‘제법 꼴값이군.’ if anyone has any input.

Ahhhh, and so here’s my new translation project~!! (Please, feel free to add it to NU, I don’t really know my way around that…)

I’m really, really curious what his top secret is (got spoiled lol, it’s a fun one hahaha) and why is he such a jerk lmao, I can’t wait to translate/read more soon~

I will be trying to stock pile a little so I can post regurlarly, which would probably be weekly, also I’m contemplating on whether or not to cut the chapters into parts (max to 2-3, I’m not a fan of too much chopped up chapters) since the chapters are REALLY long but I guess I’ll see about that later~ (Oof, I just checked and the whole of it is like 138 Word pages so OTL, we’ll see how that fares… xD Btw, PUIW was almost 300 pages soo this is half of it but still, it only has 7 chapters lol) But to get some general idea, would you rather wait a bit longer to get a full chapter or would you prefer me to chop it into a few parts and wait for a shorter time for a new chapter? (On average, one chapter is like 20 pages in MS Word lol) I’m not really saying any set timeline for now because I will decide on that after I have a bit of a grasp on my translation speed~ ^^ But I’d say chopped would be about weekly and full definitely slightly longer than that. (That is without TLC/Editor, it could very well change with one~ The language the author uses is also a little harder, more casual/unique/slangish(?) so trying to bring that to life will be bit of a struggle and probably slow me down a bit, too.)

Also the chapters will be unedited since I don’t have an editor for now (please, don’t hesitate to hit me up if you wish to help with TLC/Editing~ ^^)

Oh, and whenever I want to take a break from this (of course it won’t interrupt normal updates), I’ll translate some teasers (which I could be picking up later or not) and post them~ ^^ Ah, and don’t hesitate to recommend me some Korean novels (doesn’t have to be necessarily BL~) if you know of something~

Sorry for the massive TN lol, anyway vote what you prefer and hope you’ll enjoy it~ (As I’m reading this while translating, I don’t know what’s gonna happen later either so I’m as clueless as you all, hehe)

Oh and btw, do tell me if you find any mistakes or if there’s something you don’t understand ^^

Top Secret – Chapter 1 Part 3

Translator: Ranka

Editor: defiant.potato

Part 2 ending, ‘He felt wronged. He, himself, was drinking! The moment Jaeyoon opened his mouth, thinking he couldn’t be beaten like this, the man’s big hand strangled him.

“Ark!”’

He struggled with the hand clenching his neck. The man was really strong.

“That… …let me… go.”

His flailing hand grabbed the end of Sieon’s coat. Was it because of the height difference? It was hard to steady one’s body while hanging. The hand grabbing his neck tightened its grip. Jaeyoon’s eyes opened wide. It was hard to even make a single moan. It really seemed like he was going to die. As he felt the sky turning white, the pressure on his neck was loosened and he breathed in a mouthfull of oxygen. Jaeyoon colapsed to the ground and panted. Both of his eyes welled with tears.

“Just keep this in mind. If you reveal this in the future, I will bury you on a mountain nobody knows about.”

Jaeyoon nodded eagerly. He didn’t know what he meant but he had to survive first. He exhaled dryly.

“How dare a little brat who’s still wet behind the ears try to defame me, did you leave your liver in the refrigerator? Since when have you been aiming for me?”

It was megalomania.1 Technically, it was you who ruined our 100 days celebration!

“What will your glaring at me like that do, hurt me?”

“…unfair.”

“What? Don’t stutter like a dimwit, if you’re human, speak human (words).”

When he drew near, the smell of cologne was palpable.

“It was you, hyung, who drank the alcohol, it’s unfair.”

“It was you who gave me it.”

“Eh?”

What I gave him was cola, though?

“You thought you’d be safe after you dared to give me that cursed poison?”

As his forehead got shoved and pressed by fingers, Jaeyoon only blinked. That was right. Park Jeong Sieon, the man who carried on his shoulders rumours that will go down in the history of Heemoon2 High School, was the owner of a body constitution that wouldn’t even blink at 5 bottles of soju but would get drunk out of a glass of cola. Of course, his drunken habits were him being gentle as a lamb and too obedient. A trained dog. A faithful dog.

“You get drunk from drinking cola?”

Staring blankly at the counterpart that had just strangled his neck, Jaeyoon asked. It felt like he was having a nightmare.

Scribble, scribble.

Only the sounds of pencils rolling could be heard in the classroom full of the examinees going over their workbooks as the exam was quickly approaching. With the pressure of the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) just around the corner, everyone was only solving the problems over and over. As he stared out of the window blankly, Jaeyoon screamed in a low voice at the shock of getting hit on the head.

“Ha Jaeyoon! What are you doing when the exam is just around the corner?!”

A homeroom teacher, who was being poisonous lately, scolded the absentminded Jaeyoon with a swing of the roll book. Patting the stinging crown of his head, Jaeyoon hastily buried his nose into the workbook. Looking back at the stabbing sensation in his back, Yoonjae only slightly opened his mouth and asked what was going on. He answered by putting his palms together and putting them close to his cheek in a sleeping gesture. As Jaeyoon usually slept a lot, Yoonjae immediately understood. There was not much time remaining until the date marked red on the calendar on his desk, but Jaeyoon couldn’t concentrate at all. Solving one problem, looking at the sky once, memorising one English word, sighing. The cause of Jaeyoon’s dazed condition these days was ‘the man who gets drunk if he drinks cola and becomes a gentle sheep’.

[I definitely won’t tell anyone. Really.]

[How can I believe that? There’s a saying of not trusting black-haired animals.3 The mouth is lighter than the air. One day, the enemy might notice.]

He was a man with enemies in this time of progressing unification peace negotiations.4 Well, it would have been difficult. If the enemy found out, they might defeat him very easily.

[I will really not talk….]

After two hours of torture, Jaeyoon, who was now on the verge of tears, could even call himself an independence fighter now. No, to be frank, if only Sieon hadn’t come and threatened him like that, Jaeyoon would have just passed by without knowing. Jaeyoon despaired; and to think that he’d thought this person had a kind side to him!  But he was actually a man with terrible pride, immediately running over because of something he could just overlook, strangling his neck, threatening and growling.

[Report everyday.]

[Yes?]

[Report everyday what happened, who you met, what you talked about.]

[…….]

He was released after unwillingly signing a memorandum. Recalling the terrible memory once again, Jaeyoon shivered.

“Autoreverse.”

When the preliminary bell rang, the homeroom teacher didn’t leave, but instead named the two of them. It was now a nickname even the teachers had picked up. Two people were called at once so even if they weren’t the class representative, Jaeyoon and Yoonjae were in charge of running small errands. Watching the roll book hitting the hand, Yoonjae and Jaeyoon followed their homeroom teacher. The homeroom teacher had carried a sturdy club the size of a forearm and made of oak until just a few years ago; but ever since the incident where that guy had broken the club in two right before his eyes, the roll book was flying. Of course, it was Park Jeong Sieon, the legend of Heemoon High School, who’d easily broken the oak club in two in front of the teacher.

“Ha Jaeyoon, I won’t let you off if you’ve gone loose just because you lowered your college of choice.”

The homeroom teacher added harshly as he handed over a stack of prints. In the corridor, as they went back, Yoonjae said regretfully.

“Have you decided on Hanshin Graduate School?”

The two who had attended the same school from elementary to high school had different university choices.

“Because state ones are cheap.”

He had wanted to also go to Inse College like Yoonjae. But since his younger twin siblings were also entering high school next year, and one of them had started learning to play the cello on top of that, Jaeyoon decided this way because he didn’t want to burden his parents. He did think about doing part-time jobs while attending school, but since private college tuition couldn’t be covered by a part-time job’s pay you’d do in your spare time, it was wiser to go to a national university.

“Should I also go to Hanshin?”

Jaeyoon turned around and asked what nonsense he was spouting.

“That guy is a senior at that school. He’s really smart so he won’t be held back, but I really hate that one year.”

“That cousin?”

Jaeyoon furtively asked Yoonjae, who was whining that there was nothing he could do if he met that hyung.

“…You didn’t possibly give your cousin my phone number, or provide information or anything?”

“Why would I?”

“Ah, nothing, just that I saw your cousin for the first time then. He’s a celebrity in his own way, hahaha.”

“…….”

When Yoonjae stared at him without a word, Jaeyoon felt embarrassed, as he seemed to have overreacted alone.

“What celebrity… More like a nuisance.”

Yoonjae grumbled while frowning, as if he was still thinking about what had happened that time.

“That guy is very tenacious. He’ll figure it out even if I don’t say a single thing. And I don’t really want to tell him anything.”

Then how did he know? Did he go through my clothes while I stepped out? Thinking it would be a very fitting behaviour (of his), Jaeyoon shook his head. Anyway, the conclusion was that he was perfectly captured. And this fact could be proved after school ended. After he pressed the power button to call home at Yoonjae’s suggestion of going to eat something, the handphone trembled as if it had been waiting. 4444. It had the same effect as the Devil’s number 666.

[It’s me.]

“Yes.”

[I’m in front of the 3rd subway line.]

The simple phone call, which was to the point, cut off scarily. Jaeyoon, who was summoned today, too, without fail, let out a heavy sigh. Leaving behind the puzzled face of Yoonjae, he tried not to fall. A man whose inner workings were abnormally persistent and horrid, with an outer appearance more handsome and charismatic than a movie star’s, was standing at that place when he arrived. His stubbing of a cigarette cooler than was necessary.

“Can’t you run faster?!!”

Sieon bellowed loudly as soon as he discovered Jaeyoon. What did he eat to grow this hot-tempered and impatient? Sieon roared a few times until Jaeyoon got closer. When Jaeyoon who couldn’t look at him straight had lowered his head, he lifted Jaeyoon’s chin with his long fingers, like an emperor who was choosing his royal concubine.

“Report.”

“Yes?”

Again abruptly throwing words out of the blue.

“Date of death.”

“Gasp.”

“The method.”

“I, I did… didn’t say anything, though.”

“You didn’t report!!”

As he shouted right before him, his ears were ringing. Report, he says. Does he really mean it? Every single day? What the hell does he want him to report from his day-to-day life of always being stuck at school?

“I’m a senior in high school, I have studying after school, I also go to the study room-“

“Is that more important than my enemies?!!!”

It was but I couldn’t reply.

“Then what do we do?”

When asked in a timid voice, a stupid answer came back.

“Don’t study after school.”

“Yes?”

“Don’t go to the study room.”

“That is a little….”

He has made an unbelievable demand he wasn’t able to concede to. Jaeyoon was an examinee. With less than 100 days before the CSAT, at this important time, saying he shouldn’t be going to after-school studying nor the study room, it would be better off just killing him.

“I’m going to study.”

“Oh my. Are you going to a specialized college?”

“…….”

He resolved to put rudeness into his character.

“Specialized on evil.”

Which one is more wicked!!! He couldn’t believe the word ‘axis of evil’ he’d seen in the current topics section would hit his heart like this. Thinking he’d be unable to concentrate on his studies at this rate, Jaeyoon made up his mind and raised his head. He had to tell him clearly. He thought he’d understand how important this time was after he said it well, as he had also once been a senior in high school.

Hyung-nim!”5

“Are you a punk?”

“What?”

“Who are you calling hyung-nim?”

“…….”

Frankly speaking, the ‘hyung-nim’ term suited him extremely well, but as he had refused it himself, Jaeyoon decided to take out the ‘nim’ honorific.

“Oh, anyway. My exams are just around the corner so it’s day-to-day everyday. I didn’t leak anything to the enemies, either. I don’t have the time as I’m so busy with studying.”

He was rambling but he was desperate. Jaeyoon couldn’t waste his time on this. The exam was nearing and every minute and second were important. Jaeyoon wanted to get out of this difficult situation relying on being treated well as he was a Korean examinee.

“You dare to be busier than me?”

However, only on this man it didn’t work.

“Get in.”

“Where are we going?”

“You said you wanted to study. Then get in.”

So maybe he did get it. With a slight hope, Jaeyoon immediately jumped into the car. However, contrary to Jaeyoon’s expectation that they’d go to a study room, Sieon’s destination was Jaeyoon’s house. Why did we come to my house? Jaeyoon stared with anxious eyes at Sieon, who sat in front of his parents. He, who had entered the house he was coming for the first time ever to without the slightest hesitation, met Jaeyoon’s parents in a polite manner. His mother, who had suddenly brightened up at the handsome man who had unexpectedly come in, couldn’t conceal her joy at the sight of the student ID (card) he held out.

“… and so I’m trying to help Jaeyoon a little.”

“Oh my, but you must be busy. It’d be a nuisance, then.”

“I’ve seen him since we were kids, and he’s like my little brother, so this much help is nothing.”

Liar. Though he muttered so inwardly, Jaeyoon was looking at him with surprise. What had Sieon just said? He’d offered, of his own initiative, to give Jaeyoon private lessons. Jaeyoon recalled his memory of such an appealing thing he had said a little while ago.

“If you’re majoring in law, you will already have a lot to study just for yourself, so wouldn’t our child be in the way? You don’t even want to get paid for the private tutoring.”

His father didn’t seem to be against it either. Indeed, the parents might wonder what lies are those, when a someone from Inse University comes to offer free private tutoring which they couldn’t even dare to dream of. But to the party directly involved, Jaeyoon, it was nothing more than a calamity. In the end, in that welcoming atmosphere, Jaeyoon watched his mom and dad repeatedly thanking him while holding his hands; things proceeded so rapidly that soon everything was out of the hands of the party concerned, himself. At Sieon’s parting words of ‘Looking forward to tomorrow’, Jaeyoon collapsed after saying, ‘I’m screwed’. The failure of developing telepathy and not being able to send his parents SOS became his eternal regret.

“How could he be so handsome and behave so maturely. He must have a girlfriend, right?”

His mother was as excited as a single woman on a spring day.

“If he did, it’d have to be either an alien or a saint.”

He couldn’t even imagine it. With such a wicked smiling face, having a lover.

“Oh my, look at you. Why are you jealous over such a thing? I gave you birth so you also can go anywhere without feeling small. I’ve given you the basics, so now it all depends on you.”

The mother was perfectly calm, unaware that she had pushed her son into the depths of an evil abyss.

1) megalomania – an unnaturally strong wish for power and control, or the belief that you are very much more important and powerful than you really are, a tendency to exaggerate (link)

2) Heemon – nonsense lit., burlesque, lit. parody, humorous writing meaning

3) not trusting black-haired animals – 머리 검은 짐승은 거두지 말라 – Not completely sure, but what I found from the interent, it’s idiom which basically means to not believe even the saints (all living beings)

4) unification peace negotiations – South Korea and North Korea

5) hyung-nim – Gives more respect to the person, also often used by gangsters for their boss etc.

(Still looking for TLC if you’re interested ^^)

Sorry it took so long again this time, I had trouble with 2/3 lines but at least I finished the monstrosity that is chapter 2 (70 pages in Word, 70! I mean it’s with the raw in it but still! this one was just 54 pages if you want to compare)

Also for future chapters, when the RAW will be in English, I’ll bold it without TN (with TN when the English word is written in Hangul (Korean characters)), when the text puts stress on a word, I’ll bold and cursive it, and when the text/author uses this (?) after a word to indicate if they’re using the right wording (it seems to be a thing in Korean, especially in TV captions), I’ll cursive(?) it like this, is that understandable? Please, leave a comment if something isn’t so I can adjust it, hopefully will see you in two weeks (it’s just that there’s few parts that are confusing so hopefully it won’t slow me too much again T_T If so, I apologise in advance T_T)

Top Secret – Chapter 1 Part 2

Part 1 ending, “Who’s next?”

Sieon was saying to start the game again, which had been interrupted by the girls’ arrival. The fact that he was still hurt seemed not to register in his mind.

“It’s me.”

When Jaeyoon raised his hand cautiously, Sieon’s eyes grew grim. As if he was displeased at the way he sipped on his cola or something, Sieon kept glaring at Jaeyoon the whole time. But what could he do about it when he couldn’t take alcohol? Not even daring to look him in the eyes, Jaeyoon threw the question at him in a tiny voice.

“Buddhist culture in the Goryeo Dynasty?”1

Sieon emptied his glass, pretending he hadn’t heard. It has been like that from the start. The ones who had deliberately posed difficult and tricky questions like the elements of the periodic table, the chronological table2, the Seven Warring States etc., also shut their mouths at the simple question that Jaeyoon asked. Jaeyoon was obviously upset, because he ignored the Coke as if he didn’t want to drink something like that. After emptying the glass, Sieon sprang to his feet. He’d drunk so much that he had to lean against the wall and looked around a few times before he went up to Yoonjae’s room on the second floor. Even after drinking to that extent, there was no hesitation or stumbling in his steps. It was a losing game from the start. Yoonjae and Jinwook, who had somehow sobered up, breathed a loud sigh. Donghyun was already sound asleep.

“So awful. He still remembers the periodic table of elements.”

“How did you survive having such a cousin?”

Youngsoo opened his eyes furtively and said in a cracked voice.

“I gave up.”

“What’s with coming here today, of all the days? Urgh….”

“I couldn’t even make eye contact with the girls. Did you see how they sent hearts to that hyung as soon as they came?”

Everybody sighed yet again. They’d tasted the cup of crushing defeat in appearance and yielded to the character which was on par with his looks. Even Jinwook, who was popular for his neat appearance, couldn’t raise his head. The despairing examinees lost all self-control, raised the bottles of liquor and began to drink.

“By the way, why did he get so angry?”

“His name is Sieon. For to react like that when asked.”

Youngsoo doubted. Maybe it was because they didn’t know.

“It’s the curse of my (maternal) aunt’s couple.”

Yoonjae lowered his voice. The examinees naturally gathered around him.

“?”

“My aunt is Jeong Jeonga. Uncle is Park Jeongshik.”

“?”

Everyone pricked up their ears and paid attention.

“In the name of gender equality, as my aunt insisted on using both names fairly and not just following the man’s last name, hyung’s name is Park Jeong Sieon.”

“Ehh?”

The meaning changes with the order, so it was funny.3 -You know what it’s like in elementary school. While they made fun of his name, he also got a lot of nicknames”

Then Jeong Park… Jeong Park-ah.4 Set off by someone’s laughter, everyone started to giggle one by one.

“He’s always been like that, but that’s what really set his nature off.”

Lamenting the atmosphere in which they died one by one and the girls had left, they were giggling overjoyed as if they knew some great secret about the unexpected intruder – whom they all perceived as such – quietly so as not to be heard upstairs. Jaeyoon, who had been drinking only cola since the beginning, looked down at those friends of his forlornly, and agonized over how they would clean all of this up. After all, the aftermath would come down on him. Then he heard footsteps from upstairs.

“He dares to touch what’s mine? Is that bastard really out of his mind?”

Seemingly talking on the phone resting on his shoulder, he put on his overcoat as he came down, irritated by the caller on the other end.

“I’m coming right away. Tell him not to move a muscle. If he moves from there even a bit- Hey, kid, get me something to drink.”

At the urging of ‘Quickly!’, Jaeyoon, who was a little dazed by Sieon’s words over the phone,  ran over and handed him the cup of cola he’d been holding. When he received it, Sieon downed it in a flash, then shouted at the caller again and hung up. Relieved to see him standing at the front door and thinking he was going to leave, Jaeyoon was startled when Sieon suddenly collapsed with a plonk. Blood was seeping from his right hand, the one he’d broken the soju bottle with.

Are you alright?5

He asked in a worried voice. He didn’t know if it was because he’d drunk five bottles in a row that he was suddenly overcome by drunkenness. As Jaeyoon approached and helped him up from the floor, a strong liquor scent could be smelled from the staggering Sieon. The living room was already littered with drunkards, so the alcohol smell wasn’t enough to make him frown. Jaeyoon was rather puzzled because it seemed like perfume to him.

“Excuse me, be careful.”

Yes.6

“!!-“

It was a gentle voice. Although it was low and dry, Jaeyoon tripped slightly because there was something tender about it.

“You are bleeding through your bandage. Shouldn’t you go to the hospital?”

The man grinned at the worried Jaeyoon. Seeing the smile, Jaeyoon thought his heart would drop with a thump. That face, with its stiff frown, looked like it could melt away any moment now and turn gentle, laughing even.

“Will you be okay by yourself? I need to clean up here a little and help my friends.”

“I will do it.”

The man walked with big strides, picked the scattered drunkards one by one and carried them into the master bedroom. Jaeyoon followed and took out a blanket. Still, Jaeyoon thought the rumours came with a lot of exaggeration, seeing as how he was kind enough to personally cover up his school juniors. As he even went to clean the littered scraps of food in the living room and picked it up, Jaeyoon ran to stop him. He was worried that he might get something on his luxurious-looking coat.

“Just leave it be. I will do it. You should quickly go to the emergency room at least.”

“It’s okay.”

When his eyes slanted into big slits and smiled, Jayeoon wondered if his heart had gone crazy again.

“Be careful on your way.”

His mother said, carefully handing over the hot, steaming pot. After hearing the story from her son when he returned early in the morning, with a look of ‘who can stop you’ on her face, she didn’t say anything and simply gave him honey and bean sprout soup.

“Study even more from tomorrow onwards.”

She didn’t forget to remind him as the true parent of an examinee.

“Yes.”

Thanking his mother for making the hangover soup without any complaints at his sudden request, Jaeyoon carefully held the hot pot and opened the front door.

The house was quiet. It seemed like nobody had woken up yet. Jaeyoon smiled softly at the occasional groans coming from the bedroom. He went into the kitchen first, set the pot on the stove and looked at his watch. It seemed he’d have to wake the guys up before going to the study/reading room.7

Having finished preparing for the guys’ whining of stomachache once they woke up, Jaeyoon popped his head into the living room. The man he’d cleaned the living room all night with had been sitting on the sofa, asleep. He was the sort of man who had a habit of sleeping quietly after downing five bottles. As expected, Jaeyoon thought, rumors couldn’t be trusted. He’d covered the sleeping man with a blanket.

When he recalled the other’s fatal smile, Jaeyoon’s heart slightly trembled. Although he’d thought that face was like a sculpture’s the moment he’d come through the front door, his whole impression of the person changed with those slanted eyes and those curled up lips. The man’s face was newly imprinted in his mind.

However, when he nervously came out into an empty living room, there were no shoes by the front entrance. He had been sleeping there when Jaeyoon had left home to get the soup, but it seemed like he’d left at some point. Realizing he was feeling disappointed, Jaeyoon slapped himself on the cheek.

4444.

Seeing the number on his phone screen, Jaeyoon stopped in his tracks and tilted his head. Because you need to either set your phone on vibrate or turn it off in school, the phone comes alive only for the short bit while you’re headed to the study room. There also wouldn’t be anyone who called, except family. Since all of his friends were at school, and his other friends attending different schools were also test-takers, Jaeyoon’s phone was basically unused, save for looking at the time or urgent matters. But an unlucky number like 4444 appeared.8 And 3 times at that. It may be some useless advertisement or a strange phone call, but as he was about to press the button and call back, the phone vibrated.

“Hello.”

[It’s me.]

It’s me, out of the blue?

“Excuse me?”

[At 5 o’clock, come running like an arrow in the direction of the convenience store.]

“Excuse me? He… Hello?”

After only speaking their business briefly, the person on the other end hung up. It was an oddly familiar voice. Although no specific person came to mind, Jaeyoon tilted his head and folded his phone.

“I’ll pass on the study room today. I’d rather just go and sleep.”

Youngsoo grabbed his stomach and groaned. Yesterday’s rest hadn’t been enough, and throughout the lesson his face looked haggard, like a chick who’s been medicated.

“Whoa- What if I’ve bet everything on the 100 days, and now won’t be able to go to college, huh?”

Youngsoo suddenly fell flat on his face and shrieked. Although he’d bet everything on the one hundred days, he was slightly giddy that whole day, but pretended not to know anything.

“This is all your cousin’s fault! Why did he come?!! Why did he break the bottle?!! Was he showing off his strength?!!!”

Knowing that it was useless being angry now after not even being able to make a noise in front of the person concerned, he wrongly took his anger out on Yoonjae. As expected though, Yoonjae wasn’t in the mood to put up with it. He, as much as Youngsoo, was absent-minded all day. No, all the members of the group who’d been there that day spent the important D-Day -99 as if their brains were blank.

After sending Jihye home the day before, Yoonjae was on his way to meet her for the first time since, his steps very heavy. He’d kept staring at the screen ever since he’d gotten Jihye’s clear message. His expression seemed difficult. Jaeyoon stealthily asked.

“Jihye, was she very hurt?”

“No, that’s not it, but it’s embarrassing.”

The more he thought about Yoonjae, who replied bashfully, the more he wondered if his anger would rise, scratching his head. Yoonjae’s face looked like a rotten apple after he got grilled by his parents, who’d returned yesterday evening. It wasn’t enough that his cousin ruined the 100th day and his relationship with his girlfriend took a hit, he even had to snitch to his parents. He’d knelt down all night listening to their nagging, so he was making up for his lack of sleep at school. Yoonjae’s dishevelled appearance was a few light years away from his usual neat one. While patting Yoonjae’s back out of pity, Youngsoo kept kicking the school gate. Six years before, not only was Sieon late for the entrance ceremony, but he also rammed a car into the school gate; this was the place where his legend began. So much so that it wasn’t even a problem that he was a 17-year-old driving a car at the time – rather as if one couldn’t think of something like this – It was a wonderful incident. The middle bars of the school gate were dented even now. Only then did Jaeyoon come to his senses. That voice.

“Hey, where are you going!!!”

Yoonjae called out, but Jaeyoon only raised his hand and ran. Behind the school, there was a very svelte and good-looking car parked in front of the convenience store. If Youngsoo saw it, he could say what make and model it was and from which year but, unfortunately, Jaeyoon was weak with car models and things like that. Still, it seemed like a good car just from looking. To find the man, Jaeyoon looked around the inside of the convenience store. Bang-bang; Jaeyoon turned around at the sound of the car horn, widening his eyes at the sight of the man’s face that appeared behind the tinted car windows. At the sight of him who looked ice cold from head to toe, Jaeyoon started to feel as nervous as he had been that night. It seemed like it took a whole year before he got in front of the car door.

“Get in.”

Jaeyoon paused and bowed politely.

“Hello.”

“To hell with hello, get in.”

After simply being ignored, Jaeyoon, who was embarrassed, decided to get in the car first and opened the door.

“Ah, Yoonjae was with me too-“

“Shut up.”

Gulp. The moment Jaeyoon got in, Sieon took off in a hurry. Jaeyoon who was taken aback not knowing he’d start the car, tried to pull on the seat belt but it wasn’t as easy as he’d thought, so he struggled pulling on it a few more times. The man, who didn’t even think about such a thing, drove at a high speed between the cars without batting an eye and speaking nothing. At the cold and hardened face, Jaeyoon was very tense and regretted not bringing Yoonjae along. He couldn’t understand himself, who’d just run as if he lost his soul. The place where the car stopped after a long ride was a secluded lot. He rubbed his stiff shoulders because he couldn’t fasten his seatbelt all the way here, and followed the man out of the car. He felt somewhat uneasy not seeing even an a dog pass by.9

“What’re you cooking up10?”

The man who took out a cigarette and smoked at a terrifying speed as soon as he got off, opened his mouth after a long while. Although his voice sounded rough as if he couldn’t sleep for the whole night, strangely it wasn’t unpleasant to listen to. His gaze went from Jaeyoon’s face to his nape and stayed there for quite a while. Jaeyoon swallowed his saliva from tension.

“Did somebody bribe you?”

“Eh?”

When Jaeyoon let out vain sound to the random question, his face darkened in one breath. Jaeyoon hastened to shut his mouth.

“You made me drunk and put me to work, did that make you feel real better?”

He took a leather glove out of his pocket and pulled it over his fingers? Crack! Until he heard the scary sound, Jaeyoon was thinking blanky, ‘such long fingers”.

“Fess up before I count to three.”

“With what?”

“You made me drunk!!!”

As if annoyed, the man grabbed Jaeyoon by the collar. Jaeyoon was taken aback by the behaviour of the approaching man, but he thought calmly. He quickly realized that the other was talking about the day before yesterday. However, Jaeyoon couldn’t understand any more. It was him who had opened the bottles and drunk the alcohol. Moreover, he’d even pressured his friends to drink. Jaeyoon neither sat close to him nor had he handed him drinks. If there had been a problem with the alcohol there, there was no reason to only call Jaeyoon and receive such threats.

“Did you like how I obediently did as I was told?”

The man was smiling but it was somehow terrifying.

‘As was told?’

Repeating his words, Jaeyoon tried recalling the memories of the weekend.

[Don’t clean it. I will do it.]

[…….]

[Excuse me, then please collect the empty bottles and put them outside.]

The man’s work handling was extremely fast.

[Excuse me, could you also move this? I’ll wash the rag.]

[Give me your hand, I’ll bandage it again. Make sure you go to the hospital later.]

[It’s been all cleaned up, so get some sleep. Should I get you a blanket?]

“…….”

It seemed like he had made him do this and that. However, he was the one who kindly did everything. Even if he said he didn’t like it, there was no one who cared. Jaeyoon was a bit dumbfounded by such a ludicrous attitude now. Is it possible he becomes gentles if he drinks? And does everything he’s told? Come to think of it, the weekend’s behaviour was 180 degrees different to the atmosphere he’d shown before that, and what he had heard he usually did. Shocked by his friendly smiling face, Jaeyoon, not being able to think of anything else, concluded that when the man grinding his teeth in front of him drinks alcohol, he becomes more gentle than anyone else in the world. For some people the film11 gets cut off, but if he dragged him here and is even giving him such a ridiculous grilling, he must remember everything.

“How dare you make me drink that?”

He felt wronged. He, himself, was drinking! The moment Jaeyoon opened his mouth, thinking he couldn’t be beaten like this, the man’s big hand strangled him.

“Ark!”

TN:

1) Goryeo Dynasty – Korean kingdom founded in 918, during a time of national division called the Later Three Kingdoms period, that unified and ruled the Korean Peninsula until 1392. Goryeo achieved what has been called a ‘true national unification’ by Korean historians as it not only unified the Later Three Kingdoms but also incorporated much of the ruling class of the northern kingdom of Balhae, who had origins in Goguryeo of the earlier Three Kingdoms of Korea. The name ‘Korea’ is derived from the name of Goryeo, also spelled Koryŏ, which was first used in the early 5th century by Goguryeo. (wikipedia link)

2) the chronological table – 연대표: Probably refers to either the timeline of history, or order of the kings of Korea

3) The meaning changes with the order, so it was funny. – Park Jeong (박정) can mean ‘heartless/unkind/cruel etc.’ and Jeong Park (정박) can mean ‘anchor/berth/moor’

4) Jeong Park-ah – ‘-ah’ is basically just a suffix attatched to names to indicate closeness or familiarity with the person you are addressing. Some call this an ‘affectionate’ (noun), 정박아 – imbecile

5) Are you alright? – He’s using a extremely repectful tone the whole conversation, and pretty much all the time with Sieon.

6) Yes. – Sieon is also being respectful for the whole duration of this conversation, only.

7) study/reading room – A place exlusive for studying which is usually open 24/7, it’s also paid, a few examples:

8) But an unlucky number like 4444 appeared. – The number 4 is a symbol of bad luck. In elevators, the letter F indicates the fourth floor instead of the number 4. The pronunciation of the number 4 sounds similar to the word ‘死’ which means death in Chinese characters. In China and Japan, the number 4 is also associated with misfortune or death.

9) a dog pass by – idiom, ‘not seeing even an ant pass by’

10) cooking up – plotting/hidden intention/ulterior motive

11) film – memory

Top Secret – Chapter 1 Part 1

Translator: Ranka

Editor: defiant.potato

1. Heartless Man

“100 days anniversary?”

Jaeyoon asked back.

“It’s finally the weekend and my parents went away on a trip too, so the house is empty.”

Yoonjae smiled brightly, saying wasn’t this a good opportunity. Because their names combined as Jaeyoonjae, they were nicknamed Autoreverse. They’d been good friends since a long time ago, so long they couldn’t even remember. Their strong relationship extended from elementary and middle school to even high school, where they were in the same class for the full three years.

“But I can’t drink.”

“Dude, it’s about the atmosphere. I obviously know you can’t drink, you think I’d force you? Jinwook, Yongsu, and even Donghyun will come.”

The last day of hope for people taking the exams, 100 days before the CSAT. The meaning of playing while drinking alcohol was to start afresh once more with new determination. That was the only significance to getting drunk. There was no better break for those taking exams and living each day stuck in the dullness of preparing for the tests. Since Yoonjae lived right next door, he didn’t have to get permission from his parents, and Jaeyoon, who was tempted by the prospect of being freed from the constant schedule of going to school, then the library, and returning home, readily nodded. Just like his father, who abstained from drinking because he had no enzymes that break down alcohol in his body, Jaeyoon also couldn’t drink and passed out after 2 cans of beer, but as Yoonjae had said, it was all about the atmosphere.

“The membership fee is 20 000 won.”1

Even if you say you’re not drinking, you still have to pay the same price. But 20 000 won! When he saw Jaeyoon’s surprised reaction as if he was thinking ‘are you going to bathe in the alcohol?’, Yoonjae said with a grin.

“I also called some girls.”

“Eh?”

“Jihye is also bringing her friends this time, so try not to count your chickens.2

No wonder the membership fee was so high, there was another purpose. The lively and cute Jihye was Yoonjae’s girlfriend, whom he had been dating since last winter. Even the reserved Jaeyoon was quite comfortable with Jihye; it was all thanks to Jihye’s outgoing personality.

“What examinees.”

But at that time, Jaeyoon, who was scratching his face in embarrassment and didn’t look like he hated the idea, couldn’t feel the dark energy that would be cast over his future.

With the help of Youngsoo’s older brother, a box of soju3 was bought. Everyone was excited by this triumph; only Jaeyoon looked at the enormous amount of bottles on the table and fell into a state of disarray, not knowing if he would be able to get through the night safely. It’s unknown if it’s people that drink alcohol or if it’s the alcohol that drinks people, but what was certain was that these guys would be drinking it all even if they had to stay up the whole night. Since girls would be present, they wouldn’t drink until they passed out, right? Jaeyoon struggled to contain his rising anxiety and placed the Coke that he’d be drinking among the soju bottles. While he was picking the snack bags from the plastic bags and putting them on the table, Jinwook, who was cleaning the living room and bustling around next to him, clicked his tongue and ran into the kitchen, bringing out some pretty plates.

“You can just rip it open and eat from it, what’s the fuss about?”

“Don’t talk about things you don’t understand. Girls like this kind of stuff. Dude, this is why you don’t have a girlfriend.”

Immediately counterattacking Youngsoo’s rebuke, Jinwook ripped open the snack bag.

“Did you see the math teach’s face today? He was going around like crazy catching the kids.”

“He couldn’t have even imagined we’d be doing something like this at home.”

On one side, Donghyun and Yoonjae giggled as they were tidying the floor.

“When will the girls come?”

“It’s almost time. They’ll meet and come together.”

“Is Yoonjae’s girlfriend that pretty?”

Envious, Youngsoo asked Jaeyoon secretly.

“Her heart is prettier.”

When Jaeyoon answered with a smile, Youngsoo rolled on the floor and rubbed his arms hard.

“Wow~ Ha Jaeyoon, I can’t believe you’d do such a goosebumps-inducing attack!! If somebody heard this, they’d think it was your girlfriend.”

“Shut up, asshole. As fitting of Autoreverse.”

“Then again, you’ve been stuck to each other like gum since the first year. If that dude Yoonjae didn’t have a girlfriend, I’d think you two were dating.”

“What nonsense are you spouting?”

The Yoonjae who had only been listening cut in.

“What about it, it’s the trend recently!”

A trend is still just a trend. Jaeyoon, who never even dreamed his friend would look at him like that, also glared at Youngsoo as if he was speaking nonsense.

“Then do as you please, why stick yourself into Jaeyoon’s businesses?”

“You know, it’s a problem starting from me being a visual4.”

“It’s good that you know.”

Just then the doorbell rang.

“Seems like they’re here.”

Without even checking the intercom, Yoonjae immediately opened the front door. Both Youngsoo, who was rolling on the floor, and Jinwook, who was emptying the snack bag onto the plate, ran to the mirror as if they had made an appointment and groomed their faces. After they got the desired outcome, the moment when everyone paid attention to the front door, filled with expectation…

“What’s with these guys?”

A low, deep voice was heard. Naturally expecting the girls’ clear voices, their eyes popped open at the appearance of a man with a big build filling up the front door.

“I see you’re going nuts.”

As soon as he entered, he looked over at the table covered with alcohol and snacks5 and spat out as if they were pathetic. He clicked his tongue as he looked up and down at the boys that were standing like waiters lined up at a restaurant.

Hyung6….”

As soon as the word “hyung” came out of Yoonjae’s mouth, everyone went into a state of extreme tension and looked at the mysterious man once again. Everyone knew that the sole person the only son, Yoonjae, called hyung was his cousin, Sieon. Ever since he was a kid, every teacher who saw Yoonjae looked at him in surprise, ‘You are Sieon’s cousin?’ – Yoonjae was famous at school for being his cousin, they weren’t even brothers – Yoonjae was treated as special not just by most seniors, but also by the ones in the broadcasting department, who were famous for being fussy. As soon he met the eyes of Sieon’s who was looking around the house, Jaeyoon felt like a frog before a snake7. Sharp gaze. Sieon was a man who could emit such an aura.

“You’ve been annoying, so I came to see you for a bit, and you’re doing such stupid things?”

“Did you call mom?”

“You’ve set it well.”

Ignoring Yoonjae’s words, Sieon sat in the middle of the table set up in the living room and suddenly opened a bottle of soju.

“What’re you doing still standing? Sit down, everyone.”

“Hyung!”

“You must have set it up for drinking, no?”

No other words were needed. It was worse than the rumours; seeing his presence first-hand and reading the room, everyone sat in line. The third-year high school students squatting in front of Sieon were very nervous, wondering what he was about to do. Those rumours of his, that he is second to none, that he’d broken the school gate on the day of the entrance ceremony, and that he leaves a pool of blood wherever he walks with a single fist were full of exaggerations…. However, no one had the courage to ask the person himself if it was true. Naturally, they couldn’t tell him the set table was prepared for other guests.

“Why is hyung getting in our business?”

Of course, the only one who could stop him was Yoonjae. Everyone sent Yoonjae energy full of fighting spirit.

“It’s our 100 days anniversary. I’m sure hyung did it, too.”

“How could I have done something like this? It’s only the ones who waste their brains that care about these things.”

With his cynical words, he chugged down a shot in one breath. And another shot. Jaeyoon looked at the glass shot that had been emptied out in an instant with surprise. He quietly worried if it were okay to drink it like one would water. But that had been useless worrying on Jaeyoon’s part, who couldn’t drink. Looking at Sieon who had emptied a bottle of soju in a flash by himself, they obviously needed to interfere. Everyone looked at each other and began exchanging wary looks.

“What are you doing, not drinking? Isn’t that why you’ve bought so much?”

If they didn’t drink, it seemed like he’d kill them in a moment. If they couldn’t bring themselves to get their hands on the glass shot, if they didn’t drink, their lives would be in danger… Just looking at each other with cowardice, in the midst of hesitation, Youngsoo suddenly raised his hand.

“Excuse me, hyung-nim8!”

When Youngsoo unexpectedly came forward, everyone stared at him, and Youngsoo tapped his chest once as if to say to leave it to him.

“Hyung-nim, don’t you want to bet with us?”

One of Sieon’s eyebrows rose.

“Uwa~ Just pour it.”

“Yes, let’s drink today and die tomorrow.”

“I’ve even gone to the hair salon because of today.”

“Guys….”

In an instant, empty bottles rolled on the floor. As he looked pityingly at his friends who were just drinking from the bottles and hadn’t even touched the snacks that had been prepared with effort, Jaeyoon finished them one by one. However, the atmosphere that had already been destroyed couldn’t be restored anymore. It was because of Sieon, who had gone up to the 2nd floor, the man who turned the atmosphere from a road to 100 days to that of a devastated homeless person. Naturally, Jaeyoon’s gaze rose to the ceiling.

Shortly after his arrival, Jihye had showed up with her friends. But the innocent female high school students, who were as beautiful as first-class models, fell in love at a glance, completely ignoring the hearts of the poor lambs who had been eagerly looking forward to their arrival. They were only infatuated with Sieon. It was also because half of the boys were reeking of alcohol and staggering. The boys who had asked to celebrate the 100 days anniversary together couldn’t possibly have looked nice, being already dead drunk9.

Youngsoo’s proposed bet was to solve problems. The penalty was to drink one shot of soju if you couldn’t answer the other person’s problem. If the opponent got it right, the one who asked had to drink. The biggest advantage of test-takers was their ability to memorize; in less than a year, they had to stuff a plethora of knowledge into their heads. It also had the side effect of forgetting everything once they were done with the test. It came from the nifty trick of it being absolutely advantageous to them seeing the precedent of the older brothers who forgot everything once they entered college. In addition, everyone was in favour of Youngsoo’s proposal because their side had the advantage of more heads. If your ulterior motive is to sit and suppress our affection, we can just make you drunk and clean you up to the next room

Contrary to expectations, however, Youngsoo’s treacherous scheme of never getting knocked out first and not even letting him catch a glimpse of the girls’ backs helplessly collapsed. Whether it was the fruits of Korean’s learning by rote10 or not, Sieon was able to answer each of the questions. Thanks to that, the examinees who had to consecutively take one shots from the early stage were beginning to feel a sense of defeat. It wasn’t only the boys who were getting drenched in defeat.

Oppa,11 can I call you oppa?”

“You’re already calling me that, what bullshit! Would you commit murder, then beg for forgiveness?”

First, elimination.

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

“Why? Are you gonna claim to be a woman with that face of yours?”

Second, frustration.

“Oppa, what is your name?”

At the third question mixed with nasal cute12 sounds, the soju bottles were suddenly smashed with a clank. At the sight of the shattered soju bottles and Sieon’s hands flowing with blood, screams erupted from here and there. As soon as someone’s white handkerchief approached Sieon’s hands, which were wet with a dark scarlet color, everyone who stumbled upon his glaring eyes turned to stone. That’s exactly what Medusa’s eyes would look like if they were real.

“Oppa, your hands….”

“Shut up.”

“Eh?”

“Get out of here before I stuff that into your beak13.”

“!!!-“

“Gasp!”

“……!!”

Yoojae gestured to Jihye to leave. His brain hurt. Yoonjae felt that his relationship with his girlfriend would end right here if he was to leave it as is. Jihye also sighed and raised her friend that was sitting next to her. In the chilly living room, after the girls left, just five guys sat around and stared breathlessly at the wild beast who was in a bloodbath.

“Excuse me, treatment….”

Jaeyoon managed to open his mouth with difficulty. Yoonjae got up with a sigh and went into the master bedroom. When the first aid kit was brought, the man who was silently emptying his fifth bottle of soju, wrapped the bandage with a practiced skill, without even the slightest tremor. Easily bandaging himself with only one hand and even tying a strong knot, he held out his glass again.

“Who’s next?”

TN:

1) 20 000 won – about 20USD/15EUR

2) try not to count your chickens – It’s literally eggplants in the Korean lol. It’s a negative statement to mean that someone should not depend on something hoped for until he or she knows for certain that it will happen.

3) soju – A traditional Korean clear, colorless distilled alcoholic beverage.

4) visual – handsome

5) snacks – Korean is  ‘안주’, which is snack/appetizer usually served to alcohol.

6) hyung – A word used by males to adress another male older than them who they are close to, literally means ‘older brother’.

7) like a frog before a snake – A metaphor to being seized with fear or to be frozen.

8) hyung-nim – Same as ‘hyung’ but more respectful, ‘nim’ would literaly mean ‘sir/madam’.

9) dead drunk = Gondre mandre (곤드레만드레) – A state where you aren’t of sound mind or in which you can’t keep yourself steady due to being dead drunk or asleep. Fun fact: It’s also the name of a famous Korean trot song by Park Hyun Bin.

Park Hyun Bin – Gondre Mandre MV

10) learning by rote – cramming

11) oppa – Same as ‘hyung’ but it’s used exclusively by females.

12) cute = aegyo (애교) – cute display of affection often espressed, including but not limited to, through a cute/baby voice, facial expressions, and gestures. For visualiation two videos below, both are legendary moments ^^

Aegyo by SHINee’s Onew (male version)
Aegyo by SNSD’s Sunny, Yoona and Sooyoung (female version)

13) beak – mouth

Top Secret – Chapter 3 Part 4

Maybe because it had been snowing all night, snowflakes were like blooms on the bare tree branches. On such a Christmas day, when snow neither really piled up nor was too scarce, Jaeyoon kept fixing his hair since early morning. Jaehee looked at him, her quiet and nerdy older brother who kept hovering in front of the mirror, with interest. Speaking of this, didn’t my brother also go out yesterday?

“Oppa, should I take care of your clothes?”

“Eh?”

“I saw your coat yesterday and found there was a lot of dust on it. Jaesung bought a new coat. Wear that.”

“Why go to such lengths… is it that dirty?”

“To be frank, navy blue doesn’t suit you. You look good in white, oppa.”

At some point, Jaehee took out the coat from her twin younger brother’s room. Although he refused – his pride hurt that he was the same size as his younger brother by three years – Jaehee stubbornly put it on Jaeyoon. The hooded double coat made the young Jaeyoon look even younger, but it also made him look livelier since it highlighted his pale, yellowish skin.

“See? It suits you.”

“Jaesung will get angry.”

“That brat is always borrowing from you. Go out like this today. Ah, I’ll put on some wax.”

Jaehee hummed as she went to her room. He pretended nothing was up, but it was obvious that something had happened to that nerd and she was happy. Having also taken perfume out of the drawer, Jaehee smoothed Jaeyoon’s hair and even wrapped her cherished muffler around his neck.

“This is much better.”

“Jaehee, the color of this muffler.”

“You looked kind of pale, so at least like this, you’ll look somewhat lively. Oppa, if you just go out like that, it would be like you’re advertising to everyone ‘I’m an examinee, so I’m a corpse.’

“…….”

“These days, people even look so cool in job interviews. Oppa, you’ll also have an interview soon.”

Jaeyoon left the house after being nagged by his younger sister, who took care of this and that. It was spot-on, so he couldn’t refute anything, and even accepted the handkerchief as she took care of him like he was her younger brother. He was bothered by the tightness of his hair, but moved towards the appointed place recalling his younger sister’s satisfied expression.

Fortunately, he wasn’t late this time.

Arriving 30 minutes in advance due to the previous day’s experience, with a puff of white breath, Jaeyoon watched the passersby. On Christmas morning, the streets were at their peak and the last carols were ringing.

As he looked around to see which side he would come from and sniffled, a black Pontiac pulled up in front of Jaeyoon. It was exactly the appointed time.

“Hello.”

“…….”

When Jaeyoon approached and greeted through the open car window, Sieon paused for a moment and stared at him.

“Hop on.”

As soon as Jaeyoon got in, the car left. After seeing the other’s reaction to the attire his younger sibling had paid so much attention to, feeling awkward, Jaeyoon looked outside the window aimlessly and feigned indifference.

“I thought you were a snowman.”

“…….”

Even if his eyes were pinned to the window, his ears were pricked up, so there was no way he wouldn’t hear the mumbling in the small space. Learning of Sieon’s view of his white coat and red muffler, Jaeyoon’s shoulders drooped.

“Should I at least buy you a hat?”

“No.”

If he wore a hat here, he’d be a snowman for sure.

“Ha-”

“Where are we going?”

“To collect debts.”

“!!-”

“You promised yesterday.”

“Heok, but it’s broad daylight!!”

“What’s in that head of yours at this age?”

“What?”

“Sly.”

“…….”

After having suddenly been turned into a lustful juvenile delinquent, Jaeyoon was no longer confident in continuing the conversation, so he buried himself in the seat. Not long after, the car passed through Inse University’s main gate.

“Why here?”

“To collect debts.”

He wanted to ask what money lending business Sieon could have at school, but he would put nothing past this man, so Jaeyoon shut his mouth again. Going through the large campus and its dense forest, it seemed like you could enjoy a campus life like the one in dramas. Glancing at Jaeyoon, whose eyes were full of yearning and mouth hanging agape as he took in the university campus, Sieon smirked and laughed.

When they entered the school’s computer room, they ran into Lee Jinwook, whom he had met before.

“You really came.”

“Hello.”

“Long time no see. How have you been?”

When he met Jinwook’s friendly smile, his until-then anxious heart seemed to settle down. Jinwook led him to the front of the heater in the classroom.

“How’s our school? Don’t you want to attend?”

“Ah, yes.”

“It would be nice if you passed and I got a cute junior like you. We’re highly notorious because of that guy, so juniors don’t even approach us.”

“We don’t have time, so write it quickly and let’s go.”

“You, really! Then at least go to the local PC room. Also, it’s not like you don’t have a computer at home.”

“I have to check and make sure with my own eyes.”

“Aigoo, sure you do! Jaeyoon, come here.”

“Ah, yes….”

At Jinwook’s gesture, a confused Jaeyoon followed him and sat down in front of the computer. When the admission application came up on the screen, Jaeyoon looked up at Jinwook’s face with an inquiring gaze.

“Fill it in slowly.”

“No, I…”

After confirming that the application form had Inse University’s official seal on it, Jaeyoon looked at Sieon again.

“What are you doing? Write it down.”

“No… It’s… I won’t fill it in.”

“Why?!”

“It’s not the university I will be attending.”

“Why? Is something wrong?”

When the atmosphere turned weird, Jinwook approached and asked. Sieon frowned and said to Jinwook:

“Go outside for a bit.”

Jinwook looked back at them before retreating.

“Why can’t you fill it in, are you computer illiterate?”

“No, that’s not it.”

“You only do exams for Categories One and Two. Our school does one for Category Three, too.”1

“Why do I have to apply for admission here?”

“Because you’ll be attending it.”

“…….”

Jaeyoon’s breath stopped for a moment.

“I’m going to Hanshin University, though.”

“Why, because you’re birdbrained?”

“… it’s nice.”

“So you want me to transfer there?”

“Why would you transfer?”

“Then attend here.”

This would never end if it kept going like this. He got called out on Christmas, so he’d come with a slightly excited heart; after just one glance, Sieon had called him a snowman, and was now asking him to fill in an admission application.

“Why should I attend here?”

“Because I’m going here.”

Exactly, I can’t even tell you that I don’t want to attend here! Jaeyoon thought that a more realistic and serious conversation was needed.

“It’s private here, so the tuition is expensive.”

“Don’t worry about that.”

“How could I not?!”

“You’re even screaming, are you provoking me?”

“N-No. My grades aren’t enough, either.”

“When I went to your school, I saw everything. It’s good enough to pass.”

“…….”

So that’s why he went.

Before he knew it, Sieon was tapping on the keyboard himself. Jaeyoon grabbed Sieon’s hand and tried to stop him but, overwhelmed by his glaring gaze, he slowly withdrew his arm. But there’s something I can’t accept, mumbled Jaeyoon.

“Why are you suddenly forcing me to attend?”

C.C.”

“!!-”

“Yesterday, you definitely said you’d take whatever punishment. Fill it in and take the test.”

Sieon did bring up Give&Take and emphasized it yesterday evening, but none of the words that followed had entered Jaeyoon’s mind.

C.C. Campus couple.

Spacing out after that one word Sieon had said, Jaeyoon doubted his ears hadn’t misheard. How could that word have come out of this man’s mouth? Illogical,2 unspeakable,3 to make matters worse4 No, pull yourself together! You didn’t suffer only once or twice!

“You’re just going to keep an eye on me under the pretext of attending the same school, aren’t you?”

Jaeyoon quietly voiced the intention he could easily infer based on his experiences until now. Sieon said he’d tutor him, but then he got locked up as if this man was someone great. And judging by the blueprints of his more-than-obvious mistreatment, he probably wouldn’t be allowed to go to class after being seduced into attending the same school. So he wouldn’t be put on the spot absent-mindedly, Jaeyoon quietly glared as he tried to steal a march on him5 and the movements of the fingers typing on the keyboard came to a halt.

“You won’t let me make friends, make me report every day and grill me, right?”

“…….”

C.C is Coca-Cola6, right?”

“…….”

“Isn’t it?”

By now I know how your brain works. You’re either going to say, ‘Are you wising up?’7 or you’ll suddenly yell, ‘How dare you lecture me!!’. His simple downcast look and creased forehead was somehow scary. Wondering if he was too on the mark, Jaeyoon ducked his head and avoided his stare. While regretting he hadn’t just pretended he had no idea, he heard Sieon’s ominous voice.

“If you FAIL, be prepared.”

“Hic.”

As Jaeyoon answered with a hiccup instead, Sieon began typing in the application form again.

After that, Sieon’s mood didn’t look that great. It didn’t ever seem good, so it could just be considered normal, but when Jinwook’s questions came only in the form of mouthing and gesturing to Jaeyoon, he knew Sieon’s mood was especially bad. But he couldn’t confess to Jinwook, who knew nothing about the matter, that [it didn’t go his way because he’d hit the bullseye with the remark about his plans to harass and surveil him].

First of all, although he received the application in confusion, Jaeyoon didn’t think much about the seriousness of the situation. He’d been preparing for the entrance examinations to Hanshin University; if he suddenly changed schools, never mind the grades, since it was a private school, realistically, tuition was the biggest problem. No matter how Sieon tried to force it, impossible was impossible. So, on the surface, he decided to take the essay exam and go for the interview. He didn’t know what he’d have to do if he insisted on refusing, so he made up his mind to just do it.

At almost three times the cost of tuition and college life that would have a profound impact on his social existence from then on, there was no way that an immature child’s whim of wanting to switch universities would work on Jaeyoon’s parents. No matter how much Sieon desired a campus couple life of surveillance and machinations… First, Jaeyoon just filled in the application form so his debt was paid.

“That guy’s more savage today than normally.”

Only after Sieon left the room, saying that he had to attend some business in the department office, did Jinwook let out a big breath and say this. He waved his hands as if to ventilate the previously suffocating air.

“Thank you for last time.”

“Eh?”

“You took us to the room and put us to sleep there. That heartless jerk couldn’t have done it. He’s someone who throws us away on the street even when we drink in school.”

“Eh… no way,”

He wanted to say that he’d definitely been told to put them in the garbage bag, but there was no way he would really do that.

“He’s someone who does what he says he will. Once, I greeted the morning in an actual trash can. Ah, it’s a very intense memory.”

Jinwook gazed far out the window with a deep look. That memory being something he never wanted to recall, his expression became detached.

“That’s why we’re keeping an eye on you.”

“?”

“Who knows what’s wrong with him, but he went around without spilling anything
(about you). He even contacted me in advance, saying that he’ll be coming today. Thanks to you, I’m called out without even being allowed to have Christmas.”

Jinwook smiled bitterly, recalling how he’d protested, ‘But it’s Christmas’ and the evil man’s reply had been, ‘You’re going to be wrestling with the computer inside your room anyway, so come over and open the door’. Given what sort of man he was, with that handsome face and exuding an arctic aura, never mind dating, you couldn’t even approach him or see the tiniest speck of humanity. If he didn’t want to date, he shouldn’t interrupt his friends’ love affairs/lives. They’d known each other for a few years, but Sieon was a dude whose world he still couldn’t figure out/comprehend.

The Sieon he knew had recently started dragging around a little kid. No, he felt apologetic to call this young man who was about to come of age a kid, but in his white and round face, there was a childlike freshness.

“It’s Christmas, but you’re chasing after hyungs? You’ve filled in the application, so you should at least meet up with your girlfriend.”

Jinwook was taking meticulous care, in case this innocent little lamb fell into that wicked person’s clutches and kept failing at relationships like they were. He planned to take advantage of Sieon’s absence and help Jaeyoon escape. However, Jinwook didn’t know that this innocent little kid sitting before him was spending Christmas with his ‘lover’. Even if the world turned on its head, it was unimaginable that his ‘lover’ was Park Jeong Sieon, whose mind ran in 6 dimensions. When Jaeyoon meekly rejected with an ‘It’s okay’, he couldn’t be anything but cute.

“Really, come to our school. I’ll protect you from that jerk at all costs.”

“Ahaha….”

Jaeyoon only awkwardly smiled at the goodwill of the kind senior who was suddenly bursting with love for his junior.

“What nonsense are you spouting about protecting what? Think about passing your thesis and graduating.”

“You’re good at that.”

“Humph.”

Having finished his work at the department office, Sieon gave Jaeyoon a nod. The latter got up from his seat and said goodbye to Jinwook.

“Take care. See you later!”

“Goodbye.”

He politely said goodbye and followed after Sieon, who was in front. Until they got into the car, the latter didn’t say a word. He didn’t speak much originally – even if they had conversations, they didn’t go well. Bothered by the deep crease on his forehead, Jaeyoon kept glancing at Sieon.

He had filled in the application as directed, so if Sieon was dissatisfied with anything… perhaps he caught on that Jaeyoon didn’t want to go?

Since his face was like a blackboard, with all his thoughts clearly written on it for all to see, Jaeyoon was a bundle of nerves worrying what to do if the man noticed in advance and got upset. He fiddled with his hands while biting his lower lip, a habit that came out when he was nervous.

However, he didn’t want to spend a hard time under Sieon’s surveillance even in college. No matter how short the time they spent together would be – as Sieon was about to graduate –, he didn’t want to go through his hopeful freshman year in depression. Even if they were lovers, no meant no.

The awkward air lasted even after arriving to Sieon’s villa.

Soonsoon, who was faithfully waiting in front of the main door for the owner to come back, seemed beyond herself with joy when Jaeyoon visited, and busily ran between the bedroom and living room, as if holding a celebration. Sieon left his jacket on the sofa and stomped off into his room. While patting Soonsoon’s head, Jaeyoon whispered softly.

“We have a long day of crawling on our bellies today. He’s on fire.”

As if understanding, Soonsoon lowered her body. Seeing it, Jaeyoon almost burst into laughter and barely held it in, petting Soonsoon’s back. For some time, the relationship between these two who shared a sense of camaraderie had transcended species.

“Let’s pretend you don’t know even if you do from now on.”

That was the time when Jaeyoon got a new survival ticket.

TN
:

1) “You only do exams for Categories One and Two. Our school does one for Category Three, too.” – So, from what I gather, Korea has their universities split into three categories and each one has a different exam.

2) Illogical – A four-character idiom, meaning the ‘words’ 어(語), the ‘not’ 불(不), the ‘make’ 성(成), the ‘words’ 설(說), it means ‘no way’ or ‘the words don’t make sense’

3) unspeakable – Another 4-character idiom, meaning the ‘words’ 언(言), the ‘words’ 어(語), the ‘path’ 도(道), the ‘cut off’ 단(斷), it means ‘lost for words’ or ‘can’t be expressed in words’

4) to make matters worse – Yet another 4-character idiom, meaning the ‘snow’ 설(雪), the ‘top’ 상(上), the ‘add’ 가(加), the ‘frost’ 상(霜), another way to translate it is ‘adding frost atop snow’ or ‘adding insult to injury’; it means that even if frost falls on top of a snow, it doesn’t mean anything, it’s an idiom which often appears in Buddhist books and originally meant ‘useless intervention’, but is interpreted as ‘bad things keep on happening’ in modern times.

5) to steal a march on him – Gain an advantage over unexpectedly or secretly, as in Macy’s stole a march on their rival department store with their Thanksgiving Day parade. This metaphoric expression comes from medieval warfare, where a march was the distance an army could travel in a day.

6) Coca-Cola – Raws are Coke-Cola, but I’m assuming it’s a slip-up from the author.

7) ‘Are you wising up?’ – lit. getting wrinkles in your brain

(Still looking for TLC if you’re interested ^^)

I’m so sorry, but it’s now completely translated (and pretty much also edited) so you can expect (hopefully) regural updates from now on, just pray I don’t get stuck up on some part while TLCing and we should be gucci 🙂

Top Secret – Chapter 3 Part 3

Editor: defiant.potato

Even if it was Christmas Eve, it didn’t mean everyone was happy. Some people were sentenced to a farewell, having the ring they’d prepared after gathering a lot of courage returned to them. Some people ate expensive food without being able to taste it. While everyone was painted as having a blast, there were also some people who worked hard to pick up after troublesome people.

Jaeyoon sat on an old chair with yellow filling sticking out, glancing around. It wasn’t even late at night, but a drunkard was already occupying the corner seat, leaning his limp body back in it, and you could hear a loud quarrel between a woman in a short miniskirt who seemed a little risqué and a taxi driver.

The police station he had never entered or seen before seemed unfriendly and unrefined, not any different on Christmas Eve.

“Name and resident registration number. Give me your address.”

Jaeyoon looked up at the policeman sitting in front of him and writing the police report with a timid expression. Of course, Sieon, who was sitting next to him, looked very nonchalant. At the officer’s request, he threw his wallet and didn’t hide his annoyed look. Then the eyes of the officer who was writing the report became fierce.

“Are you kidding with me right now?”

The policeman seemed rendered speechless due to Sieon’s brazen attitude of sitting with his legs crossed, completely indifferent. To no avail, a frightened Jaeyoon looked at Sieon. What kind of shameless attitude was that, after causing an accident and going to the police station? When the red blood on the collar of Sieon’s silver dress shirt caught his attention, the situation from a little while ago came to Jaeyoon’s mind as if it were unfolding before his very eyes.

The broken-hearted man, who was complaining after grabbing Jaeyoon, rolled around on the ground after being hit by a fist that flew in from somewhere. The ‘bam’ sounded like a sound effect from an action movie, so it seemed like he got hit properly. The lovelorn man coughed and before he could pull himself together, was jabbed in his back with feet wearing shoes. Then, as he was again rolling on the ground, the other climbed on top of him and punched him. Jaeyoon wasn’t sure if the sound of him stopping Sieon came first or if the voices of the other people who entered the parking lot did; what he clearly recalled was that he vividly witnessed the expression of ‘The splattering blood’.

In fact, Sieon had only hit the broken-hearted man a few times, but because he’d always had a powerful fist, the lovelorn man couldn’t resist even one punch and his face had torn here and there, needing to be taken to a nearby hospital for brief emergency treatment. He was sitting in the back now.

“I’m never going to settle! Such a bastard should be thrown in jail!”

He shouted with unclear pronunciation because of his swollen mouth.

“Quiet. Why’s the dumb, salty bastard that got dumped by a girl, boozed himself up and cried meddling?”

“You-You know how I feel!”

“I do know you’re a lousy bastard.”

“Quiet down, please. Are you a hoodlum, Park Jeong Sieon-ssi? If you have complaints, talk it out. Why hit people?”

“Because that guy hit first. Can you say so even after you’ve seen his face? This was self-defense.”

When Sieon pushed Jaeyoon’s face toward the policeman, he became embarrassed. The policeman examined Jaeyoon’s face in detail through narrowed eyes. It was true that he’d gotten hit, but it was too embarrassing to compare his stinging jaw with the lovelorn man’s half bandaged face.

“When did I beat that guy up! Did you see it? Did you?!?”

“It will have been recorded by the CCTV in the parking lot. Should I just make a DVD and send it to that Miyeon girl as a package? How you were rolling around like a wuss?”

“This fucker!!”

“Be quiet!!”

At the never-ending argument, a seemingly seasoned officer banged on the table with a folder. A nearby policeman stood up and grabbed the shoulders of the broken-hearted man, who was ready to run with his staggering body, and stopped him.

His gaze alternated between Sieon, who was arrogantly lifting Jaeyoon’s chin and smirking as if to say ‘Just try it’, and the lovelorn man seething with anger, and he sighed.

Then, Sieon’s mobile phone rang in his pocket.

[Why aren’t you coming? Where are you, you bastard?]

The loud voice that even Jaeyoon who was sitting next to him could hear was not just slightly angry.

“Police station.”

[…….]

The force that was about to pour out calmed down in an instant. And with quick wits, he immediately asked [How many of them? 8? 10?]. It seemed like Sieon hadn’t caused only one or two such incidents. After all, even what little Jaeyoon knew, his ten fingers weren’t enough for counting.

“One.”

[What?]

“A weasel-like son of a bitch got dumped by a woman and was acting like a stupid shit, so I helped him out a little. He now looks like a raccoon’s cousin from the swelling.”

The two sweaty policemen who were trying to stop the broken-hearted man, who was becoming more agitated with each point Sieon stressed, as if the latter wanted to hear him squirm while snickering, looked at the agitator with resentment. Cold sweat trickled down Jaeyoon’s back. Lamenting Sieon’s superciliousness now was of no use; perhaps this was how he’d built up his antisocial character and gained the ability to make a person’s insides turn. A sigh escaped naturally.

He picked up two Yulmu-cha1 from the vending machine and went to find him. Maybe because he went out to smoke, Sieon was standing in front of the garbage bin at the police station entrance, looking at Jaeyoon who was approaching with a grim expression. When he reached out to hand it over, Sieon took it and just put it beside him. It seemed like he didn’t have any intention of drinking (it). The Yulmu-cha quickly cooled down in the cold winter, so it didn’t have any flavour and just left the end of his tongue refreshed.

“You go.”

“Eh?”

“Even if you’re here, there’s nothing you can do. Go home.”

“But….”

Jaeyoon couldn’t answer readily and dilly-dallied, just twirling the paper cup with the cooled Yulmu-cha.

“What kind of face is that? Did I kill someone?”

However, Jaeyoon had just learned that Sieon could also kill a person with words. In the end, the lovelorn man couldn’t bear the simmering anger erupting from Sieon’s phone conversation, so he held the back of his neck and, foaming at the mouth, yelled, ‘I’ll never settle!’ Although Jaeyoon had no power to stop this man even if he stayed, he was uneasy thinking of what troubles he might stir if left by himself.

“Why… did you do that?”

Regardless of what the lovelorn man had done, if Sieon hadn’t gone overboard, things wouldn’t have come this far, so Jaeyoon’s question was laced with a bit of resentment.

“What?”

“Hitting that person.”

“You really don’t know?”

Sieon asked back.

At that moment, something fell down inside Jaeyoon with a thud.

No way, that couldn’t be…

“Well, I didn’t even get hit that much.”

Jaeyoon tried not to recall the reason why he had believed it wasn’t like that, as he handed over all of the cooled Yulmu-cha and fiddled with the empty cup as if he couldn’t even throw it away. For some reason, he became very embarrassed and shy. Sieon looked down with dissatisfaction at the phone that started ringing again, and flipped it open.

“What now? …….”

Closing the phone with a grave face, he raised his arm toward the road and stopped an empty taxi that was passing by. Then he opened the rear passenger door and pushed Jaeyoon inside.

“Go.”

He closed the door after a short goodbye, not giving Jaeyoon any time to react. It happened so quickly that Jaeyoon had no choice but to just look back at him, staring blankly at his shrinking silhouette from the backseat of the car that departed straight away.

Jaeyoon arrived home after 11 o’clock. Yoonjae was watching from his room’s window on the second floor, and when he saw the familiar shadow, he opened the window and leaned out.

“Hey, you’re late!”

Seeing the model student finally returning, Yoonjae, who appeared proud as things he’d gone out for had seemingly gone well, clung to the windowsill as the cold wind came in and waved to his old friend. But the weak hand of his friend that had gone out to confess on his first date – Yoonjae firmly believed this to be the case – indicated the results weren’t good. Paying no attention to the fact that it was late at night, Yoonjae ran out barefoot, wearing only a coat over his T-shirt. About to reach the gate, Jaeyoon showed signs of embarrassment as Yoonjae jumped out of the next-door house.

How could he shake off this quick-witted fellow?

To be honest, he wanted to vent about this pathetic situation to someone, but given who the other party involved was, Jaeyoon couldn’t breathe a word to this fellow and asked himself frustratedly, ‘Why did you have to be his cousin?’, misplacing his resentment.

“Why did you come out?”

“It seems like it didn’t go that well.”

Yoonjae, who was looking Jaeyoon over, said as if dispirited.

“… nothing special.”

“What is ‘nothing special’?”

Even if his mouth was ripped apart, he didn’t want to say that he was threatened on the main street because he was five minutes late, that he scarfed down food so expensive he felt like it was worth a fortune, or that the finale was crowned with a brawl in the parking lot which made him end up at the police station. When Yoonjae stared at Jaeyoon’s face, he hesitatingly tried to gloss over it, adding ‘Didn’t meet’ in case he might get caught.

“What, they didn’t come?”

As if he had just understood Jaeyoon’s non-refreshing feelings,2 Yoonjae frowned. And he blamed the other side that didn’t come out for his friend of ten years. Jaeyoon sighed with relief when Yoonjae easily believed him.

“Come on, why didn’t they come? Then, where are you coming from?”

“Just from here and there.”

“Have you heard from them? You didn’t come after standing there alone like a fool, did you?”

Although he thought he could avoid the other’s questions if he said they didn’t meet, Jaeyoon became overcome with frustration because of the even more persistent questioner.

“They’re busy, so we couldn’t meet.”

“What can you be busy with on the Eve?”

He tried to break off at the gate, but Yoonjae followed him. No matter what, he couldn’t stop the heart of his friend who came to comfort his dejected self who’d gotten stood up.

He took his coat off, set it on a hanger and, giving his friend who was perched on his bed a look, left the room under the pretext of washing up. A hollow face appeared in the bathroom mirror, looking like it had been severely punished after getting caught smoking by a supervisor/dean. It definitely didn’t look like the face of someone who’d come here after their first date. Jaeyoon squeezed the toothpaste onto the toothbrush and blankly stared in the mirror. It reflected an ordinary, bored, pale skinned third-year high school student without much charm, worn out after a year of preparing for his examination. It wasn’t even a cute, soft girl with aegyo3; he admitted that it was the normal, dull face of a stiff boy out of touch with love. Still, since he decided to date me, he’s being irresponsible, Jaeyoon thought.

He was also anxious that he was the only one being serious.

Granted, what Jaeyoon was thinking might not be important to Sieon. In the first place, they’d decided to date to keep his mouth shut, so all he needed to do was supervise Jaeyoon’s mouth. However, if that man had come out on a one-sided promise in the midst of a busy schedule – judging from the call, he really might not have had any time – it made him hesitate to conclude that Sieon had meant to drive him home just to play a joke on him. Recalling Sieon’s expression when he’d asked back if Jaeyoon didn’t know why he’d done it, his face was strangely sulky.

“Mulling over it alone….”

There was no need to predict. He confirmed yet again today that Sieon was a person very much like a rugby ball: you never knew where he would go. So, mulling it over alone would just be a waste of time. Next time, he’d ask everything until he fully understood.

After making his mind up, Jaeyoon brushed his teeth, rinsed his mouth hastily and rushed into his room. Yoonjae, who was lying on the bed, raised his head, but Jaeyoon ignored him and took his phone out of his coat. Worried about the other still being at the police station, Jaeyoon typed out the number with an audible ‘bikbikbik’ and carefully listened to the signal he started to hear shortly after.

[Hello.]

“Excuse me. It’s Jaeyoon.”

[Eh? Who?]

“…….”

Jaeyoon was lost for words at the voice that suddenly pretended not to know him. His face was not thick enough to say he was his lover, and he refused to say he was a fool.

“Ha Jaeyoon.”

[Sure, what is it?]

Then he heard a yell of ‘Hey! I said not to touch mine!!’ over the phone. Only then did Jaeyoon realize that the person he was talking to over the phone wasn’t Sieon. He mistook it because his voice was similar, but when he heard the original(?) voice, he told them apart easily.

‘Who is Jaeyoon?’    ‘Shut up’    ‘This jerk!! Who saved your life? How can you dare!’     ‘Someday, I’ll arrest you.’     If you happened to overhear it, the voices that alternated were so similar that you’d mistake it for a person doing a double role.

[What?]

When he heard his blunt voice, Jaeyoon swallowed.

[If you’re not talking, Imma hang up.]

“Ex-Excuse me, you aren’t still… still there, are you?”

[You’d like it if I was?]

“N-No.”

[Got time tomorrow?]

“Eh? Time?”

The short call ended with Sieon’s ‘There’s something I forgot to tell you because it was so hectic, so come out.’ Although he was confused by the phone call that had ended in a flash, in any case, it was fortunate that he seemed to have left the police station. Turning around in relief, he was surprised by Yoonjae staring at him, so he went back into the bathroom, pretending not to notice. A hum leaked out unknowingly.

After finishing the simple, short call with Jaeyoon, Sieon immediately kicked the closed door. As if someone had been listening in on the other side, a low scream was heard. When he opened the door, Simin4 was slumped on the floor, holding Soonsoon while snickering and looking up. It was a face Sieon didn’t like the sight of.

Park Simin was Park Jeong Sieon’s older cousin. Sieon was an only child, as was Simin, and although they were cousins, they sponged off one another like actual siblings would. Their appearance was so similar that they looked like brothers, but their personalities were poles apart.

“Privacy infringement.”

“Who is it that you’re so hush about? Did you happen to get this?”

With his left pinky1 raised, Simin’s face displayed complete curiosity.

“Why don’t you just fuck off now?”

“Is that all you have to say to your hyung-nim who saved you from almost being arrested?” Don’t let up, let him have it, Simin! Power to the citizens!

Given his complacency at the police station, where he’d been dragged to after beating a man on the street, and despite the victim’s shouts of ‘I’m never going to settle!’, it was all thanks to Simin, who had decidedly hung up and come running straight away, that he was able to get released immediately. It was easier because Simin was a policeman.

He hummed and Sieon snorted.

“Don’t you need to do the tax adjustments?”

“You are the one who said you’d help with my tax, but you didn’t and left this good ‘citizen’ like a mummy.”5

He had thought of putting this mannerless cousin of his in the holding cell for at least one day, but the one to feel sad would’ve been Simin.

“Because that cretin did something bad.”

“Anyway, you owe me, so you have to do all of that.”

“You wanna say such words with that look on your face?”

Pointing to a pile of documents, Simin, who calmly spat out the homework as if it were an elementary school student’s overnight homework, smiled and cynically shot at him.

“Why did you make such a proposal if you were going to weasel out of it from the start?”

Simin threw a bunch of the documents, pretending he hadn’t heard.

Unlike Sieon, Simin was a good example of a model police officer, his face perpetually with a smile on it, having a good personality, suitable for goodwill volunteering. However, when Simin chose this profession, he faced a lot of opposition at first. He, himself had been wishing to do it for a long time, it was rewarding and he had no complaints; but, as the eldest son who was expected to take over the family business in the 3D industry, his choice of being no more than a low-level civil servant, a police officer at that, turned the family upside down. However, although he looked harmless and docile/gentle on the outside, once he made up his mind, he was more stubborn than a bull6. So, to the disappointment of the family elders that had been trying to dissuade Simin for years, they had to turn their eyes on Sieon.

Speaking of Park Jeon Sieon, if you were to tell him he should go here, he’d go up there, he was a heartless fellow who was fully committed to his pure self-centeredness – everyone nodded their heads once again at that name, thinking they named him right. However, as long as he was smart, bright and good at his job, his personality was secondary, so they made the tentative decision to hand the family business over to Sieon instead of Simin.

But Sieon suddenly changed his career path as well, and declared that he’d be a prosecutor, all of a sudden going into law. The elders, who were thinking ‘let’s wait and see how many years you can rot away because of that difficult civil exam’, changed their minds once again when he passed it in one go, even before graduating. Since their family had been in the trading business for generations, they thought that having one or two people in the public service would also be good, so the elders started to grill Simin again. Although police officers were also public officials, it was only natural that the prosecutor’s path looked better in their eyes. Therefore, Simin, who had to play a tiring tug-of-war again, reached an agreement with the elders: he was going to do his job along with helping out the family business for five years from that point onward. If he managed to do both perfectly, they would have to acknowledge his passion for police work.

“Do it properly. Uncle7 is a meticulous man.”

Sieon had wondered where his cousin found the guts to make that offer. It was Simin’s intention to make Sieon, who constantly picked on him and kept finding faults everywhere, do the work.

“Besides, if I quit the police, wouldn’t becoming a prosecutor after suffering for so many years be in vain?”

Sieon frowned and set his gaze on the files.

Top Secret – Chapter 3 Part 2

Translator: Ranka

Editor: defiant.potato

Maybe due to the weather, the streets were overflowing with couples. Sieon lifted his left hand and confirmed the time, then with a ‘hwek’ threw the cigarette he had been biting in his mouth to the ground.

“Excuse me, but what time is it now?”

As if she’d bathed in it, a woman who smelled intensely of perfume approached carefully. Between the straps of the pretty handbag hanging on her shoulder, one could see phone accessories, so it was an obvious trick. Behind the woman was a group, seemingly of her friends, sending her supportive gazes. When the man just looked her up and down without saying anything, the woman gained some confidence and came a bit closer. While Sieon briefly contemplated what to do with the woman who didn’t even know him, the main culprit caught his eyes.

“Idiot!!!”

“I’m sorry.”

His voice filled with anger also surprised the woman. Jaeyoon just bowed his head and apologized.

“How dare you make me stand here!!!”

Sieon strode ahead and came to stand before Jaeyoon. The smell that had tormented his nose disappeared and the fresh smell of soap slightly calmed his on edge nerves. I’m sorry. Jaeyoon apologized again.

“You made me stand in this damn place with all sorts of things, wasting 6 minutes and 42 seconds of my life? You want to leave the world like this? Wanna get buried? Cursed day when bloody fatsos are parading on the street! Ha Jaeyoon, you’re full of guts today, huh?”

The more the fellow’s shoulders drooped, the more he had the desire to press down.

The place also wasn’t right. Those bloody fatsos had kept traipsing back and forth in front of him for some kind of event, so if Jaeyoon had come even a little bit later, he might’ve gotten into a fight.

“Quickly spit it out.”

“What?”

“If it’s a trivial reason, I’ll throw you to the eighth lane.”

His eyes opening wide made him smile, but he pretended not to know.

“Wha..What?”

“The reason you made me stand here?”

“…”

“If you don’t speak in 10 seconds, 7. 8, 9!”

“We’re dating.”

“What about that?”

Unlike his blasé voice, Sieon was starting to see the fellow in a new light. He didn’t know what this fool was thinking when he received the text message. After all, he was a man who didn’t even know it was Christmas Eve. However, the reason he gave for meeting up was that they were dating. Since we’re dating, let’s meet? First of all, it seemed like [lover] was imprinted in this fool’s mind.

“That’s pretty daring, huh.”

He gave his first compliment, but he couldn’t be sure Jaeyoon properly accepted it since it was out of the norm.

He was ready, but seeing the looks of the restaurant Sieon went into, he gave up. ‘It’s really expensive here.’ At the restaurant’s classy atmosphere, Jaeyoon worried about his pocket’s situation first.

Since it was Christmas Eve, the restaurant had lit candles at every table to create a romantic atmosphere and there were luxurious carpets all over the floor, so you couldn’t even hear the footsteps of the waiters walking between the tables. The menu was also entirely in French, which made him unable to figure out what was what and stutter, so Sieon ordered everything himself. On the way here, it was impossible that his [You’ll pay for everything, right?] would be just empty words, so Jaeyoon had taken a lot of money out of his bank account, but it didn’t seem like it’d be enough. He wanted to cancel the food he’d ordered by calling the waiter who’d taken the order earlier.

“Stop looking around. Do you want to show off that you’re a country bumpkin?”

“…….”

“You couldn’t possibly have planned to take me to a place like a snack bar in front of a school, did you?”

I don’t want to hear such words from you, who brought a poor student not earning money to this expensive restaurant! He was preparing to say so from deep within his throat, but endured it and the words didn’t leave his mouth. It was him who’d asked Sieon on a date and he didn’t plan on freeloading either. Both were men and the cause of defeat was that he had only made a very sloppy plan for the first date, so it was only fair he paid for it. He didn’t expect the difference to be this bad. What making progress? Bullshit! If only he could turn back time to before he had sent the text, Jaeyoon thought, he’d have no other wishes.

Reality hit him as soon as the food began to come out. He’d feel sorry if the chef who’d decorated the food so appetizingly heard this, but he really didn’t want to see it.

“Eat. Are you holding a memorial service?”1

“…….”

When he just poked the food with the tip of his fork and didn’t eat, Sieon urged. There was some fun in teasing him, whose round eyes seemed to say, This is really, really expensive, right?

“I’ll pay. So eat.”

“!!-”

“Instead-”

When he blurted out those words as he was cutting the well-done steak into pieces, Jaeyoon’s face, which had brightened for a moment, hardened.

“You know Give & Take2, right?”

Jaeyoon, his fork and knife suspended in mid-air, looked at Sieon. The man was gesturing with his eyes for Jaeyoon to eat quickly, but his instincts were telling him that he shouldn’t do it without knowing what the price was. He gave it some thought and decided he really wanted to open up that handsome head which was smiling so mischievously and have a look inside. It was like every second was a fight for survival for the lover; no matter how unlike a normal relationship theirs was, this was a little too much.

What was it he wanted?

Between Jaeyoon, who would be a normal college student, and a prospective prosecutor who’d be doing well in the future, there was going to be a difference in the days to come. What he wanted couldn’t be of a material nature, because Sieon was well-aware of their gap. Then he could only look for something which required his body. Cleaning was out, because he’d visited just recently and had made the house sparkling clean.

He wouldn’t ask me to cook, would he?

Unlike cleaning, which was hard work, cooking required delicate actions and was impossible for Jaeyoon, who’d grown up as a normal Korean boy. He only knew how to make ramyun and heat up food in a microwave, so let’s put that on hold.

Looking after Soonsoon?

He sometimes did that without even realizing, so there wasn’t really any reason to put conditions on it. The appetizing food in front of him made his mouth water, but enduring and not touching it, Jaeyoon understood what [pie in the sky] truly felt like.

Sieon was having fun since he could almost hear the wheels spinning in Jaeyoon’s head. He’d never seen such an innocent fellow. It was almost ridiculous how dense (he was). It was amusing how that fool could come all this way after just that one action.

At Sieon’s urging, Jaeyoon had given him a glass of coke. That was really fatal to him. Sieon had long been well-aware that the sweet brown liquid made him extremely helpless/pliable. Having strong pride, Sieon couldn’t stand that damned state in which he couldn’t say no to any request. He became a dumb fool with a smiling, relaxed expression which he had the overwhelming desire to smack off his own face. Moreover, whenever he woke up and remembered that situation in vivid detail, his sense of defeat knew no limits. That was why there was no one who survived after witnessing it. No, they didn’t even know the reason. Except for this dimwit facing him.

Sieon thought the reason why Jaeyoon was still alive despite knowing the truth was likely because of that ridiculous denseness of his. No matter how threatened one is, they wouldn’t have the morals to date a man; Sieon didn’t understand the guy who agreed to keep the promise that had almost been coerced. And once given a position, the rigidity of sharing obligations also seemed foolish. However, what was clear was that this image of Jaeyoon was very new and felt strange.

His feeling of displeasure grew for a moment, but seeing Jaeyoon’s tilted head and the expression on his face, like his gears were zealously turning in his mind, he calmed down again. Whirr whirr, his eyeballs were rolling. Whenever Jaeyoon tilted his head, his thoughts were so transparent that Sieon could grasp every last one.

Think for a hundred days.

Like a lion with a full belly, seeing the other one so worried about the carrot he was clutching in his hand getting taken away, Sieon felt it laughable. Have you seen a lion eating carrots?

He picked up the wine glass and made a toast to Jaeyoon, who looked like he’d soon burst from capacity overload. Then, Jaeyoon’s pale skin turned red in an instant, as if burned by fire.

Tsk, tsk, dimwit. You’re a man and it took you this long to think of it.

“Should we book a hotel?”

At Sieon’s joke, Jaeyoon dropped his fork. As he leaned over to pick it up from under the table, he bumped against the plate. A quick-witted waiter swiftly brought him a new fork and walked away with the one that had fallen.

Jaeyoon confirmed his conjecture was right at the ‘hotel’ remark. This eccentric [lover] wanted the same thing as other ordinary lovers.

Sex.

Although he didn’t remember it clearly, they’d already done it, but he still felt afraid for some reason.

That time was sudden so he didn’t really know what was what and fell for it, but he wasn’t confident about what would happen if he got into that situation again with this man, who made the air vibrate with his distinctive presence just by sitting in front of him. Knowing full-well that Sieon wouldn’t listen even if he refused, Jaeyoon nodded with a flushed face, somewhat servile, terrified of saying no. To be honest, he thought it’d be fine as long as this person, who was 10000 years away from common sense, didn’t make him do anything weird.

Oho, look at this.

Sieon gave Jaeyoon a piercing stare. That blatant gaze made him redden up to his nape, but Jaeyoon tried to pretend he was composed. Although he may be a coward, he didn’t want to seem like one. Comparing himself with this person was already foolish in itself, but he didn’t want to feel any smaller.

Since he had decided to date him, and since it was the first relationship in his life, he wanted to do it properly. Although he didn’t know what ‘properly’ was, Jaeyoon thought that at least it wouldn’t be just blindly following what the other told him to do.

From Sieon’s point of view, Jaeyoon was a child with a strong sense of responsibility who saw whatever task he was given to the end.

“Quickly, eat. Let’s cheer up,” Sieon added, and the knife cutting the meat missed, making a squeaky and unpleasant noise.

Jaeyoon chewed thoroughly so he wouldn’t end up with an upset stomach. He was normally someone whose eating speed was slow – even during lunchtime at school, the bell would always ring when he’d just finished brushing his teeth. From the tension, that speed slowed down even more, but Sieon waited patiently. The table was awkwardly silent throughout the meal, and all you could hear was the clashing of tableware.

“I was joking, so collect yourself.”

“Eh?”

“Are you going to die?”

“…….”

“There is no time to go to a hotel. We have to leave right after eating.”

“Ah-.”

“Feeling relieved?”

“N-No.”

“Forget it if not, then.”

Sieon said, and looked out the window. He was already drinking the coffee that was given for dessert. Realizing he had been eating too slowly until then, Jaeyoon hurriedly started pushing the meat in. After Sieon had said to go to a hotel, he’d been too nervous to register anything happening around him. But it had been a joke.

He hadn’t known Sieon could tell jokes, but it was also the first time he’d changed the words he’d already spat out. Him not having time should be true. Then, did he split the time he didn’t have in half and show up?

“I’m sorry.”

Jaeyoon set down his fork and drank water. With a nod, he called over the waiter who wanted to bring the dessert and refused it, wiped his mouth and informed them the meal would end there. Sieon wordlessly rose from his seat and headed for the counter to pay. True to his words, taking out his card and paying for it, he said as if he’d just thought of it, “Ah, it was a reservation once.” He left mysterious words behind.

After exiting the restaurant, he adjusted the collar of his coat. Even if it was Christmas Eve, the winter cold was unavoidable. As soon as Sieon turned on the handphone he took out of his pocket, the noisy ringtone rang loudly.

“Freak.”

Flipping it open, Sieon cursed at the caller.

“Only 40 minutes passed. Is the sky falling, why are you going nuts?!”

It was the complete opposite of how he shouted loudly on the main street just because he’d waited for 6 minutes. Indeed, he was a self-centered, willful person.

“Let me eat some food, too. Aren’t I also a human being?”

Standing next to him and listening, Jaeyoon staggered a little with the shock that the other thought of himself as a human being. Sieon said, ‘I’m going now’ with a frown on his face and walked briskly with big strides to the parking lot.

“What are you doing, standing like an idiot?!”

“If you’re busy, go first.”

As he couldn’t take any more of his time, Jaeyoon said goodbye then. It had been a text message which he could have just ignored, so he felt grateful to the guy who showed up even though he had another appointment.

However, ‘Don’t waste time!’, he fiercely said with a frown, so Jaeyoon followed him to the parking lot.

Thud-

Someone weakly fell as they bumped into each other.

“I’m sorry. Are you okay?”

Jaeyoon had been walking properly so it was the fault of the person who’d hit him, but he couldn’t just pass by as if he hadn’t seen the other person had fallen. He smelled faintly of alcohol, but didn’t seem too drunk. However, Jaeyoon was worried because his untidy clothes and staggering movements told him the man wasn’t in good condition. When he reached out his hand to help the fallen man to his feet, the other hit it away.

“You bitch, how long has it been since I said I like you? I was so good to you and this is all I get from you!!”

“…….”

Unfortunately, he must have gotten his heart broken on Christmas Eve. Jaeyoon stood there for a while, then remembered Sieon who was waiting for him, and turned back. But the drunkard sitting on the ground, muttering to himself, grabbed Jaeyoon’s pants and wouldn’t let go.

“Tell me, what do you not like about me? What’s so good about that bastard?”

When the man started to sob, Jaeyoon was in an awkward position.

“Excuse me, look-”

“Miyeon-ah, I can’t live without you. You know it. So how can you ditch me?”

Now, after the man caught him and started crying, Jaeyoon couldn’t do anything and was flustered. He couldn’t just push him, the man he was facing seemed to be in a bad situation at the moment; he couldn’t shake him off coldly, but he also couldn’t keep on listening to the endless complaints of a stranger.

“We were really good (together). We dated for 4 years. How could you forget it all at once?”

“It’s cold here, don’t do this.”

He wasn’t just saying it, it really was cold. He didn’t know how long the man had been like this, but his hands were cold as ice. Jaeyoon patted his shoulders, and said it in a persuasive tone when, suddenly, the man raised his head.

“Who are you? You’re the one who stole Miyeon!!”

“Eh?”

“Tell me, where is Miyeon?!”

“Ah, Exc… Excuse me.”

“Say it! Fuck! I said, tell me!!!”

He seemed to be too drunk. The man who had drunk so much he couldn’t tell people apart hit Jaeyoon’s jaw in a fit of rage. When the man wanted to punch the stumbling Jaeyoon again, a fist flew out of nowhere.

Bam!!-

“You want to know so bad?”

The icy, dangerous voice gave Jaeyoon goosebumps.

1) Jesa – it is a ceremony commonly practiced in Korea. Jesa functions as a memorial to the ancestors of the participants. Jesa are usually held on the anniversary of the ancestor’s death. To perform ancestor rituals, the family at the eldest son’s house prepares many kinds of food such as wine, taro soup, beef, fish, three different colored vegetables, many kinds of fruits, and rice cake or songpyeon, particularly those that were favored by the deceased. The shinwi (신위, 神位) or memorial tablet, which symbolizes the spiritual presence of the ancestor, is placed at the center of the table. In modern days, the daughter or younger son of the family may perform these rites. source

Top Secret – Chapter 3 Part 1

3. The lover is annoying1

Although the examinees who had finished the CSATs were freed from the boring night study, even if they were told to go back to the fourth period, they couldn’t relax as they had to prepare their essay for the final exams. There was a new division in school, into essay class and CSAT class: the essay class prepared for the essays, while the CSAT class spent time either watching videos or doing self-study. The class ended early but, unlike the CSAT class that could do whatever it wanted, the heart to prepare for the exam remained unchanged.

Yoonjae and Jaeyoon sat at the snack bar, eating cup noodles to rest their heads. Youngsoo, who was taking another lesson after the class divided, to exaggerate a bit, ran with tears flying from his eyes.

“Autoreverseeee!!!”

“Go away. It was quite fine not seeing you.”

Yoonjae grumbled for no reason.

“Heng, is it great having class only with each other after ditching your friends?”

“Let’s set it straight. Did you enjoy appreciating the video after throwing away your friends who have to take the exam again?”

“Earlier, it seemed you were getting punished in class 3, what happened?”

The essay class gathered in the library for their lessons, so once break time came around, Jaeyoon asked what he was curious about.

“Damn it, don’t even talk about it. Didn’t I plan on bringing the treasure hidden under hyung’s bed today? Just in case the school dean appeared, everyone was firmly prepared and I told Jungseop to be on the lookout. And this brat was stuck to the window in the hallway, so he didn’t see the dean coming! It was neglect of duty, neglect of duty!”

Everyone understood when he said ‘treasures under the bed’. They couldn’t believe he’d turn on something else during the sacred video appreciation session. Everyone thought, this bloke gets in trouble whenever he has time to spare, aren’t you bored doing this until the day of graduation?

“Ugh, it was the perfect scene! Why did the Bulldog have to appear right there? Because of that, we were beaten and it got confiscated.”

‘The teachers on night duty today are on fire,’ Youngsoo mumbled and worriedly contemplated how to beg his older brother for mercy. Coming back from the stand, Jinwook started throwing the drinks he was holding one by one. Caught unaware, Jaeyoon hesitated when he saw the can’s red body.

“Why?”

“Ah. Nothing.”

Hesitating to drink a beverage just because of someone was very pathetic. Jaeyoon opened the can and took a sip, savouring the popping taste of soda. He turns really gentle when he gets drunk on this. It was only a vague memory now, but Jaeyoon, who had come all the way to this point, couldn’t help but believe it. If he saw it once more, he’d be fully convinced then.

The Great Devil who had come out of nowhere and taken him a few days ago, making him clean months old stuff, may even clean up himself. If that happened, the sweet brown liquid would be a magical medicine for Jaeyoon.

However, such a coincidence wouldn’t appear again, Jaeyoon shook his head.

“Look at this guy, he sighs and then laughs… suspicious.”

Youngsoo pointed at Jaeyoon and gave him a suspicious look. He had yet to question Jaeyoon about his disappearance on the day of the CSATs. If things had gone according to Youngoo’s imagination, Jaeyoon would feel better instead, but on that day, he’d had to roll three drunkards to the corner, throw them away, wash and clean everything up; the next day, he suffered from muscle pain and was extremely fatigued, to the point he even had trouble getting up, so Jaeyoon stared at Youngsoo, wondering why he wanted to hear it so badly. What would his face look like if he knew the truth? He drank the cola thinking it’d be fun to see the hardening faces of his friends.

“Oho, what’s with that wicked look? It’s dangerous, dangerous. There’s another lamb here that has opened its eyes to my charm.”

“Haha.”

“It’s starting again, Lee Youngsoo’s bullshit.”

Everyone had expressions of ‘can’t stop him’, but Jaeyoon was grateful for the ease Youngsoo had brought to him after a long time.

“Hanshin Uni’s essay is 20%, right?”

“The school records reflect more. I have to do really well on the final exams.”

Korean examinees couldn’t be happy after the CSATs were over. There were subtle parts where they had to be careful with each other since they could end up as rivals in the same university and the same department, so the sense of liberation from having finished the tests lasted only a fleeting moment.

“Jaeyoon, do you want to lower it and apply (there)?”

“Yep. Since it’s a national university, the tuition fee is also cheap, so that’s great.”

“Jaeyoon’s younger sibling plays cello. He wants to ease the pressure on his parents even if just a bit, this brat.”

“I see. Didn’t you say you wanted to learn archeology? So, I thought you’d go to Inse Uni.”

“That’s what I got interested in when watching a movie, but I also think going into Education and becoming a teacher would be stable.”

“Uwa~ It’d be great if the tedious exams would be over soon!”

“Should we go on a trip before graduating?”

“Oh, Lee Youngsoo, it’s been a while since you’ve said something proper.”

“You! I only ever say the right things.”

“Hey! Trouble!!!”

While they tried to agree with Youngsoo’s idea and gather opinions, Donghyun ran as if he was rolling through the entrance of the canteen, and shouted, making a fuss unbefitting of his big build. His face was snow white with terror, as if he had met a ghost.

“I’m done with bad luck today after Bulldog.”

“Do I have to take the test again because the computer was messed up since it had an error?”

“Ugh, I’d really hate that.”

“Did they suddenly change the college entrance exams?”

“What’s the trouble?”

These were the real worries of examinees. Youngsoo was indifferent, believing he had no troubles, Jinwook joked, and Yoonjae felt uneasy. Jaeyoon handed Donghyun, who was gasping from running, the can he was drinking from. Donghyun drank it up as if he’d pour it out all at once and didn’t even wipe the corners of his mouth where it had spilled, pointing with his hands and feet outside and busily trembling.

“Ou… Appeared.”

“What?”

“W-Went to the staffroom.”

“What did?”

“Kim Donghyun, don’t stammer and spit it out properly. Who went into the staffroom?”

“Hundred-100 days’ anni.”

“??-”

“!-”

“Oh no!”

“No way!!”

The one hundred days anniversary was imprinted on them as a special common memory. They looked at each other and calmed their trembling hearts. Although the one who had the deepest connection to him among them was Jaeyoon, his friends who couldn’t possibly know of the truth turned their gazes simultaneously to Yoonjae. Yoonjae scratched his eyebrows and mumbled, ‘who’d knew he’d come?’

His cousin Sieon was such a lucky guy that he’d passed the difficult bar exam even before graduation. His mother had said that morning that, now that he’d passed, it was only natural for him to meet and greet his teachers, and that maybe Yoonjae would run into him at school. But he hadn’t expected Sieon to actually come and greet the teachers. Yoonjae – who couldn’t imagine that guy living on such a high horse ever coming to bow his head, get congratulated and thank teachers – knew that his prediction had been wrong after he heard Donghyun’s sighting. Although as the years went by, the rumors had grown exponentially – Yoonjae was one of those who believed the rumors were absolutely true and in no way exaggerated – in fact, very few people knew Sieon’s face. Unfortunately, Yoonjae’s friends were among those very rare people.

“So will you get handcuffed now even for running in the hallway?”

“That can’t be true, asshole!”

“Youngsoo, you’re in trouble. You downloaded a lot from the internet. It’s illegal.”

“So I’m the only one, am I?”

The boys stood in the second-floor hallway near the staffroom, stuck to the wall and whispering in quiet voices. When Youngjae said, ‘He passed the exam and came to greet the teachers,’ their reaction was [May the gangsters rest in peace]. As their reaction was identical to his, Jaeyoon felt curiously amused and laughed to himself, but also felt sorry thinking they were being too mean.

“But what kind of level was that exam that he passed on the first try?”

“If I knew that, would I be here?”

Jaeyoon stuck his head out and looked at the one among the gathered teachers. Being taller, that guy’s head stood out and caught his eyes immediately.

“He is talking with our homeroom teacher.”

“It seems like it wasn’t a lie that she was in charge when he was senior.”

Several people passing them by stared, but the boys who were huddled together with their back stuck to the wall continued watching his every move as if they were watching a marvellous object. To be honest, their admiration for Park Jeong Sieon also played a role in this. The boys, who had confirmed with their own eyes the existence of the main character from the rumours they’d been hearing since entering school, blew the events out of proportion the next day and spoke of it as if it had been an adventure story to their friends. As if they’d seen some celebrity and their face was really only as big as their fist2.

“But what are we doing here?”

When Jinwook wondered, they fell into silence for a moment. Jinwook looked back at his friends and went on.

“It’s not like you want to meet him, and isn’t he someone you shouldn’t meet anyway?”

“…come to think of it, why did we come?”

“Donghyun saw him.”

“That he was in the staffroom.”

“Monster sightseeing.”

“What do we do if he recognizes us and tells the homeroom teacher about the 100 days anni?”

“Gasp!”

“It’ll go on our school record.”

As soon as Yoonjae’s words landed, they took a step back and moved away from the staffroom wall. However, before they could realize their situation and take action, the homeroom teacher was fast to come outside.

“What are you all doing here?”

“!!-”

“!-”

“Ah, Yoonjae is here. Your cousin came, why are you here?”

When Sieon was still a student there, the math teacher had suffered greatly, so she pretended to know Yoonjae. Just because he was cousins with Sieon, she acted like Yoonjae could be relied upon (to take care of things), which didn’t make him feel that great.

“Your hyung has a lot of interest in your grades. You should thank him.”

The homeroom teacher meddled even in unnecessary stuff.

“Yes.”

Answering obediently, Yoonjae turned towards Jaeyoon, furrowing his eyebrows and sticking out his tongue. Jaeyoon laughed at Yoonjae’s actions of secret protest. At that moment, Sieon, who had just finished greeting the teachers in the staffroom, stepped out into the hallway.

“!!-”

Although all his friends simultaneously turned their heads as if they’d seen something by mistake, having made eye contact with Sieon, Jaeyoon remained stuck in place as if they were playing a game of freeze tag3 and no one had unfrozen him.

“Things I’ve seen a lot somewhere.”

At the low murmur, the five lambs pricked up their ears. However, contrary to the tense resolution(?), Sieon only spat out those few words, turned around and went down the stairs.

“I was just nervous for no reason.”

“Didn’t we react a little too excessively?”

“Then again, he doesn’t care about people like us anyway, so we didn’t have to…”

Everyone let out a sigh at the reunion that ended so blandly. Yoonjae pushed his friends’ backs, ‘Let’s return quickly.’

“What’re you doing?”

“No-Nothing.”

Jaeyoon set aside the momentary disappointment he’d felt and ran to Yoonjae.

As soon as the CSAT scores came out, the examinees spent a busy life again. They had interviews, wrote CVs and had their own worries. Except when he was sometimes summoned to do his obligations(?) as a lover, Jaeyoon spent the days leisurely more than ever. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t worried at all, but he lowered his choice (of uni) and the homeroom teacher also said he was safe, so Jaeyoon was confident in his own way.

“Blind date?”

“It’s not right away, after the thesis exams end.”

Jaeyoon was briefly puzzled by Yoonjae’s sudden suggestion.

“Actually, it seems like Jihye’s friend Minjung had you in mind. She was there on the 100th anniversary, but there was no time.”

Although he didn’t fantasize about meetings or dating the opposite sex, Jaeyoon felt excited in his own way, so he didn’t hate Yoonjae’s words that much. Furthermore, the fact that someone had feelings towards him somehow made a part of his heart feel secure. However, the first thing that came to his mind was that man that was his official [lover], Park Jeong Sieon. It may have started due to an absurd affair comparable to a black comedy, but his heart was caught in a ‘dating’ relationship.

“Hate it? She’s a long-time friend of Jihye’s and is quite a good girl.”

“More than hating it… it’s kind of tough.”

“Why?”

“Just, there’s something.”

“…you, could it be?”

Long-time friends are quick-witted. Although Jaeyoon’s face honestly revealed the words his heart couldn’t hide, Yoonjae closed the opened book at his quiet friend’s surprising confession.

“Since when, pal? I really couldn’t tell.”

“No, it’s nothing like that… just, yeah.”

“Nothing like what? Ah! So you’re saying it’s still early to say it’s any kind of relationship, right?”

Jaeyoon looked amazed at this new side of Yoonjae, who’d surprisingly inferred everything up to that point from so little. In fact, Yoonjae’s shock was even bigger, but his face didn’t give anything away, so he appeared composed. Seeing Jaeyoon’s clear eyes, Yoonjae just thought it novel. ‘Seems like this nerd is finally seeing a mate.’ It might have been bad news for Minjeong, but this sincere fellow must have been saying it because he really liked that person, so he felt as happy as if it involved himself.

“What kind of girl is it?”

“Eh?”

“You like the kind and sweet type.”

“Ah…….”

Jaeyoon was put on the spot by Yoonjae’s curious questioning. He’d also reacted like this when Yoonjae said he was dating Jihye but, unlike Yoonjae who’d answered straight away, it was difficult for him to come up with any answer. Jaeyoon was ten thousand years away from the kind and sweet person he’d always wanted, and that person also wasn’t someone of the age Yoonjae imagined. Moreover, the other one was a man, and Yoonjae’s cousin at that.

How would Yoonjae react if he learned of the truth?

[Are you out of your mind? He’s a man. No, far from a man!! How can you, with that abnormality?! I told you over and over! You can never approach him. Do you want to ruin your life, not even living to your 20s?]

It was obvious he’ll blow his top and oppose. Maybe, after finding out, he’ll immediately seek all sorts of measures to protect him. So, he couldn’t say any more to Yoonjae. He thought that, after Yoonjae found out, everything would be over.

“Just so-so. I don’t know yet.”

“This brat used to be pure and innocent. At times, I wondered if it was just Youngsoo’s nonsense, but there really was someone.”

Today, more than ever, the power in Yoonjae’s hand patting his back felt painful.

“Don’t you do things like dates?”

Yoonjae sent Jaeyoon, whose mouth was agape, a look of ‘I knew it’.

“To make progress, you should meet often, chat together, and go out to eat delicious food, too. How about Christmas Eve? It’s also a good excuse. Call them out and confess while you’re at it.”

Before anyone knew it, Yoonjae’s imagination turned it into Jaeyoon having a crush, but it wasn’t a bad suggestion. He’d said he was a lover, but he couldn’t live just to clean and be bullied. He needed an opportunity to change this situation. However, if he heard [You wanna die?] right off the bat, he would immediately suffer a setback, so he decided to send a text message. Clicking the devil’s number and tapping out the time and place of the appointment, Jaeyoon realized that he was contacting Sieon for the first time. Yoonjae looked at Jaeyoon, who was tapping on his phone in a corner as if afraid to be discovered, with the magnanimous eyes of a senior; he couldn’t even dream that he was pushing his too nice friend to his evil cousin’s covetous mouth.

:

1) title – Ok so, 애인 (愛人), which means lover, is a Sino-Korean word (ie. borrowed words from Chinese) and so it’s made of Hanja (or Chinese characters), which means each syllable has its own meaning. When reading Hanja, the meaning and sound (phonetic Hangul) is pronounced at the same time. Probably because there’s a lot of homonyms. So for example, the meaning of 人 is 사람(person), and 인 is how we pronounce it. So, when you refer to the 人, you would read it out as “사람 인”. Now, 애먹이다 means to ‘make someone have a hard time’. By 애먹일 애, it’s saying the character 애 is read as referred to as 애먹일 애, where 애먹일 is its meaning and 애 is its sound. To sum up, the title means “The letter 애 (love) in 애인 (lover) means 애먹이다 (giving hard time to someone)”, and it’s semantically in a way saying “lovers are annoying”. Of course, it’s not true. There’s no such Hanja and the 애(愛) actually means love. The writer just wanted to carry a comic connotation by changing the meaning of ‘love’ into meaning of ‘being annoying’. I hope this makes sense. Credit: medale

2) as big as their fist – Compliment on how small their face is, an indication of beauty. The smaller the more beautiful. *pics of Minho, Jang Nara below*

SHINee’s Choi Minho

3) freeze tag – That game where you have to freeze after being touched by the person trying to win by freezing everyone until someone else who didn’t get frozen yet touches you and you can then move and unfreeze others while running away from the freezer.

(Still looking for TLC if you’re interested ^^)

Sorry, I forgot to update ;; And the title gave me a headache, still not sure it’s understandable, but I’m sorry because that’s the best I can do TT

Top Secret – Chapter 2 Part 4

Jaeyoon’s shoulders tensed up. His body was pulled with a jerk and he gave a groan of pain. His heart leapt at the lips that soon covered Jaeyoon’s as if they wanted to swallow them.

“!!!!-”

His lips were suddenly stolen, and he tried to regain freedom by shaking his head, but as even his neck was bent, an ouch unconsciously escaped him.

The lips, which were warmer than he’d expected, gently wandered over his own and tried to pry open his mouth and invade. His tongue, which was sweeping the roof of his mouth and roaming inside, gave chills to his whole body and drained him of strength. He didn’t know if the sound of his heart pounding in his head was because of fear or because of something else. Jaeyoon came to his senses when he was gently pushed by the hand hugging his shoulders and his back touched the seat. At the same time, the lips that were persistently coveting the inside of his mouth also broke off. Jaeyoon gasped as he exhaled all of his pent-up breath.

“If you forget this time, you’re dead.”

Whispering this brutal line in his ear, Sieon slightly opened the passenger side’s door, as if saying to get off. Wide-eyed, Jaeyoon pushed the door all the way open and got out of the car as was told. He stared blankly at the back of the car which left immediately after, wondering when was it he kissed so passionately, only to realize that he had just had his first kiss.

After that day, like it had been an illusion, he lost contact with Sieon. As if to prove the exchange had been established, the devil’s number 4444 no longer came up on his cell phone’s screen. At first, Jaeyoon thought his phone may have broken, fearing his future troubles. But Sieon really stayed out, leaving the house empty for a long time. His place was deserted for a few days, with newspapers and fliers piling up at the front door. Putting his ear to the door in case he went out and Soonsoon was left alone inside, Jaeyoon got suspicious looks from the next-door neighbor.

Eventually, the guard ahjussi told him that the owner would be away for a long time. He didn’t even pick up his calls. He forces(?) him to date and immediately after goes off the grid. Jaeyoon had somewhat complicated feelings.

His parents believed he was getting private tutoring so, for the first month, he said he was going to private lessons and, although he felt sorry about killing time in the study room, he didn’t reveal the truth(?). He could’ve just exposed(?) Sieon’s lie, and Jaeyoon himself knew he was strange for not doing it. When he found himself looking blankly at his cell phone that had no signal, he was startled. However, it was true that he could fully throw himself into exam preparation without his interference(?), so Jaeyoon was soon able to recover his pace. 1

And in no time, the day of the College entrance exams arrived. Since the examination site was the same as his friends’, Jaeyoon’s father decided to give them all a ride. In the front seat, Jaeyoon spotted Youngsoo and honked the horn.

“Ooo, it’s so cold. I think I’m going to freeze while guessing the answer.”

“There’s going to be a heater.”

“What if my brain freezes even before we get there? Wouldn’t that be an unavoidable natural disaster?”

Looking in the rearview mirror at Youngsoo, the drama queen, being told off by Yoonjae, Jaeyoon laughed. He couldn’t feel any tension from this fellow.

“Don’t be fussy and miss ticking any answers.”

In the last mock exam, Youngsoo was scolded by the homeroom teacher as he happened to overlook a line and wrote all the answers one space lower than he should have. He was even more humiliated by the fact that he’d checked and his mistake had actually yielded more right answers than his original version. He narrowed his eyes and glared at Yoonjae.

“I don’t want to hear that from a dude who’s going to see his girlfriend after the exam.”

“What does that have to do with this?”

Heng, heng.2 When it ends, you’re gonna run like mad, right? Eeuuu, so horny.”

“That’s it. Eat taffy and shut up!”

Yoonjae took out some taffy from his bag and blocked Youngsoo’s chattering mouth. Jaeyoon, who was so nervous that he’d put an uhwang cheongsimwon3 in his pocket, could feel his shoulders easing up at Youngsoo’s chatter.

There were some predictions that the CSAT score this time would massively drop, especially for the difficult maths I section, but Jaeyoon left the examination site satisfied with the fruits of his diliigent studying. They would get the results in the evening, so only the answers were written on the back of the test identification slip.

He met up with Youngsoo and Jinwook at the entrance of the first floor. With the expression of a man overwhelmed by the thrill of liberation, Youngsoo glided down the stair railing.

“Hey, let’s get together.”

“Yoonjae left first, saying he was going to meet Jihye.”

“Ogu, traitor, I knew he’d do that. That Lee Wanyong-like jerk.”4

“Let’s leave behind the guy with a boss5 and go. Let’s eat ramyeon, go home and guess the right answers.”

“No, no!! I want to be a free soul until we get the scores!!”

When Jinwook put his arm around Youngsoo’s shoulders in order to grab him, Youngsoo struggled and suffered. The school gate was crowded with cars from parents who were waiting for their high school senior children to finish the CSAT. Jaeyoon thought it was a relief that he’d stopped his father from picking them up. Although the weather was warmer than in the morning, it was still chilly, so Jaeyoon adjusted his collar.

“Uwa~ Isn’t that a Pontiac6? Pontiac Solstice Convertible. What kind of lunatic drives that?”

“If you’ve got money, you can drive it. What provoking are you on about?”

“I mean, it’s not in the country yet! Not only that, apparently, it’s 20,000 dollars, so if they’re not provoking in front of the examinees who are tired from the exam, what is it?”

Although he was growling and wishing for someone to crash that car, his eyes were giant hearts, wanting to touch it. Jaeyoon, who was listening to Youngsoo and Jinwook’s conversation from behind, looked at the car Youngsoo was pointing at and stopped in his tracks.

“Now I have to prepare for my driver’s licence test so I can drive on the day of the entrance ceremony. That day I’ll become the Kingka7.”

“Do you have a car to drive?”

“Oho, Mr. Kim, what do you take me for?”

“You were so happy to finish the exams, and now you’re preparing for another test?”

Jinwook shook his head in disbelief.

“It’s this damned fate that forcingly pushed me back. A driver’s licence is a must-have item to cement my cool-guy image. I’ve been wronged.”

“Everyone has a driver’s licence these days, what’s that reach?”

As if refusing to listen anymore, Jinwook’s footsteps quickened. Youngsoo ran ‘dadada’ to catch up with Jinwook and shouted at Jaeyoon.

“Hey, Ha Jaeyoon, come on quickly. How come you’re becoming like a turtle as the days go by- Eh, where did he go?”

“Oh, he followed us until the front door.”

“Didn’t this bastard run away?”

“Where would Jaeyoon run to?”

“It could be a time difference attack that the Autoreverse tried to trick me with.”

Jinwook rubbed his chest in discomfort, anxiously feeling that someday he might see this megalomaniac in a mental hospital.

The warm car was overflowing with awkwardness. Jaeyoon adjusted his collar with a different meaning from before.

“It’s been a long time.”

“…….”

The man was silent.

Jaeyoon recognized at a glance that the car Youngsoo was pointing at was Sieon’s. Although he didn’t know its name, there was no way he could forget that slim, pitch-black car body he’d seen so many times. He approached it without even realizing and stared inside, when the door opened as if to say [Get in!].

“Did you have something to do nearby?”

Unable to stand the awkwardness, Jaeyoon opened his mouth again. It had been so long that he seemed to have forgotten all the fear from a few months ago. Apart from getting slightly thinner, his face carved like a sculpture seemed not to have changed.

“The exams?”

“Yes?”

“The exams.”

Thinking it unexpected, Jaeyoon opened his eyes wide. Even if you didn’t know him well, Sieon wasn’t the kind of person to ask something like this. It was strange enough he went to pick him up on the day of the exams – he still couldn’t believe he’d really come to pick him up – but to even ask how the exams went… It wasn’t like him.

“… I managed it somehow.”

“Somehow?”

“Just as much as I’ve studied….”

“Are you a birdbrain?”

“Eh?”

“If you fail and don’t pass this measly exam, know that you’re going to die.”

Jaeyoon quietly cast his gaze outside the window.

“What?”

“… don’t you know to say ‘I’ll at least buy you taffy?”8

“So do you want to eat it?”

“No.”

Jaeyoon politely declined because if he accepted one from him, he felt like he’d really screw up.9

“What have you been doing all this time?”

Why couldn’t I see you? You didn’t even go home. You asked me out, but why did you disappear? Once he started asking, the questions followed one after another. It seemed like he’d been quite worried.

Jaeyoon waited to see what he would say but while waiting for the light to change, Sieon didn’t do anything except take the opportunity to smoke a cigarette. While fidgeting his fingers, Jaeyoon turned to look out the window again. Only then did the thought that his friends would be looking for him cross his mind.

“You’ll have a lot of time from now on, right?

“……?”

Sieon took Jaeyoon’s reaction – soundless blinking at his unreasonable words – as a yes. The car stopped in a secluded, upscale residential neighbourhood, but Sieon just told him to wait and left, getting out of the car and going into a house. In the meantime, Jaeyoon sent a text message to Jinwook. He grinned at the answer, which was clearly from Youngsoo: ‘Just wait and see when we meet at school.’

Exiting the house and walking quickly, Sieon opened the car door and threw something in. The bundle of hair that suddenly flew in was Soonsoon, the dog Sieon was raising.

“Soonsoon!”

Soonsoon, as if also happy (to see him), must’ve thought wagging its short tail wasn’t enough, so it even wagged its hips and licked him all around.

“Yaa, good to see you. Remember me?”

Sieon just shot them a glance as if what they were doing was ridiculous, and immediately started the car.

After a while, the car stopped in the underground parking lot of Sieon’s villa. When the familiar building came into Jaeyoon’s view, he instantly tensed up. Although there was an essay remaining, the exam was over, so Jaeyoon who wanted to at least spend today comfortably, couldn’t help but be very curious about the intentions of this unpredictable man. The dog in his arms, unaware of Jaeyoon’s feelings, struggled with its whole body, wanting to quickly be set down as soon as they arrived at the familiar house.

“This… Why here?”

Please, just don’t say you’re going to lock me up!!!

“…….”

“…my mom is waiting for me at home.”

That was a good excuse. It was true that, after their son finished his exams, the family would be waiting for him to go eat out.

“When the scores are out, bring it to me.”

“Excuse me?”

“The test identification slip and the score sheet, bring me all of your academic reports.”

“Wh…y?”

Jaeyoon asked cautiously, since the course of the conversation was as hard to follow as this man’s mind. It didn’t seem like he was trying to do his duty as a private tutor, which was just a cover anyway. Still, for a while, Jaeyoon held a vain expectation of Sieon who’d come to meet(?) up with him at the examination site.

“You, can you go to college with your grades?”

What were those rude words? Even though he wasn’t exceptional, Jaeyoon was a model and honor student. As if getting his answer from Jaeyoon, who was pouting at the remark that seemed to be looking down on him, Sieon headed towards the elevator with quick steps. Jaeyoon was also dragged by Soonsoon, whose ears flapped as she gave chase after her master, who was walking away in big strides. Jaeyoon also followed Sieon as if he was running (after him).

The silence continued even in the elevator. ‘He really is a man of few words,’ Jaeyoon thought. Every time he opened his mouth, he either spouted rude things or poured salt on him10 so it was better he was the type to keep his mouth shut, but he felt suffocated by the presence he had only known for few months.

“Why here?”

He gathered his courage and asked once again.

“Aren’t we lovers?”

He hadn’t expected to even hear an answer, so his heart almost jumped out of his chest at the pure contents of the one he’d received. Did he really think so? Of course, they did agree on dating but… Although that was the case, in truth, Jaeyoon who’d never ever dreamed of such words coming out of the person directly involved, opened his eyes wide. Therefore, it was no wonder that a retort akin to groan escaped him.

“Eh?”

“Are we not then?”

Under Sieon’s intense gaze which implied ‘I’ll kill you if (you say) not’, he swallowed his saliva and bit his lower lip. Jaeyoon wanted to shake him coldly and talk freely to this man who gave off the aura of ‘I’ll kill you if you open your mouth’. Even if he were to hang for it – although that would never happen – Jaeyoon entertained the thought of wanting to crack open his head and see this man’s brain.

When Jaeyoon only blinked, Sieon clicked his tongue. With a ding, the elevator doors softly opened. Sieon, looking straight at the front door, threw out a brief curse at the mess spread out in the hallway.

“Fuc-”

That sound brought Jaeyoon to his senses. The villa’s hallway was crowded with burly men squatting there, to the point where there was no room to take a step. Smoking at the window in the hallway and dressed in a suit, a man slowly walked over. He gave Jaeyoon one look and crushed the cigarette butt.

“Yo, Park Jeong Sieon, I was wondering where you’d gone, and now you deign to show up.”

“Taehwan, that guy, he looked like a skeleton. How did you make that heavyweight fellow a lightweight?”

“Come on, open the door. These hyung-nims waited for an hour.”

“That was a hell of a hit. Who taught you that?”

“Taehwan flew abroad and blew everything up. You told the Department of MassCom1 (TN: Mass Communication) and sophomores that you’ve had a hard time? Lim Taehwan wrote a memorandum that, as long as you’re in Korea, he won’t come back. He he,” he snickered.

A man with his hair dyed a fiery red and donning a leather jacket and pants approached and put his arm around Sieon’s shoulders, smiling mischievously. Sieon frowned looking at the herd, each of them wanting to say their piece. I should’ve done more to Lim Taehwan, he regretted.

Lim Taehwan’s heart was weak. When Seo Inyoung, his department hoobae and crush, hung herself onto Sieon, he felt sorry for her and, giving her advice, helped her. When picking up Sieon’s lecture timetable, he also didn’t skimp on advice on how to follow him well or his behavioural patterns. Finally, he’d even disclosed Sieon’s address, which the latter didn’t reveal to anyone other than some of his close friends – she camped in front of the villa and just waited; in the end, Inyoung went as far as calling a locksmith and got in. In fact, he had the conviction that Inyoung would soon give up on Sieon. After observing this psycho-like evil man, his personality was so indifferent to all human beings to the point it felt like they were nothing more than stones he tripped over while walking. Even if it was Seo Inyoung, the Queenka11 of Inse Uni, he reckoned she wouldn’t be able to catch Sieon in the end, although he’d only rejected her once so far. However, (he paid) the price for overlooking the pride and mentality of she who had gotten hurt: the extreme outcome was parasuicide.12 They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,13 but it was unexpected that the gentle and elegant Seo Inyoung would do something like trespassing in rage. Unfortunately for her, she’d provoked the temper of the most evil person, someone who couldn’t be controlled at all.

Jaeyoon looked at the people squatting in the hallway in bewilderment. For them all to be called friends, their personalities were too different.

“Who’s that cute little kid? Your son?”

Dumbfounded by the lame joke the guy said when he saw him, Jaeyoon was so shocked by Sieon’s subsequent statement he almost fell backwards.

“My lover.”

“!!-”

“Jerk- Now you’re human. You even know how to joke.”

“Come on, open the door. These hyung-nims will heartily congratulate you.”

“…….”

Of course, nobody honestly believed it. Although thankful that everyone easily disregarded it like it was nothing more than a joke, Jaeyoon experienced a peculiar feeling.

The bunch, who forced their way into Sieon’s home, took a seat and poured out the bottles of alcohol and snacks (that go with it) they had brought like torrents. Looking displeased at the sight, Sieon headed straight to the bathroom.

“Going to Hwemun? Ohhh, you’re our hoobae then.”

“We’re all Hwemun graduates. Even Sieon, this punk, you know that, right?”

“Is Ppengppengie14 still the same? 20 laps around the sports grounds? Every single day, I stamped for being late and there isn’t a single place in the school yard my feet haven’t touched.”

“Right, with the stamina foundations you built then, you went to the Physical Education Department.”

Knowing that Jaeyoon was their school hoobae, they even asked how the gym teacher, known for his harsh punishments, was doing.

At the continuous torrent of questions, Jaeyoon just kept nodding in agreement and looking around the changed living room. The previously empty and chilly room was newly filled with a sofa, an audio system, a bookshelf, framed pictures and so on. Now realizing that the reason why there hadn’t been any furniture in here before was Inyoung, he shuddered.

“That jerk’s cousin also goes to Hwemun. Are you that cousin?”

Dressed up neatly in suit, he introduced himself as Kim Hyunjoon and asked who Jaeyoon was.

“Dude, he said he’s his lover. Nice to meet you, hoobae-nim. I’m Song Haeyeong.”

This person, dressed in a leather jacket and with dyed hair, who held out his hand was the king of tardiness. I should, too, said someone in a hoodie and stretched out his hand, introducing himself as Lee Jinwook. His name was the same as Jaeyoon’s friend Jinwook, but his aura resembled that of Yoonjae.

“I’m Ha Jaeyoon, seonbae-nims.”

“Right, being near that heartless brute, your heart must have suffered a lot.”

As if feeling sympathy without him even saying anything, Song Haeyeong patted Jaeyoon’s back.

“Seems like Haeyeong heard Jaeyoon’s heart.”

“I do have an eye for people after all. As soon as this lamb got out of the elevator, I felt his destiny of being surrounded by that heartless jerk.”

“Infallible.”

Jinwook tore up the squid15 and grinned at Haeyeong’s meddlesome and exaggerated expression.

Although unexpectedly meeting Sieon’s friends had left Jaeyoon feeling rather perplexed, he liked them who welcomed him with a friendly attitude. He also had some slight respect for them, since they seemed to be people who had endured seemingly rough years with Sieon. And he also secretly sent his condolences to the man he’d overheard had run abroad.

“Here, take a drink. We’ve come here to congratulate that jerk, but I prefer meeting my hoobae more.”

“Ah… I don’t….”

With the cup already offered, the situation became one where both accepting and refusing were difficult.

“Oho, are you refusing the glass your seonbae offered you?”

“You can’t drink?”

Jinwook asked kindly and Jaeyoon nodded, sporting an awkward smile.

“Still, accept it first. If you’re a senior in high school and going to college, there’ll be the freshman orientation. If you can’t drink then, you’ll be treated as a fool.”

“Soju alone is strong, so you can mix it with something.”

And then Jinwook took out a 1.5liter Cola bottle from the plastic bag. Jaeyoon just looked at the bottle with the red label. If they drank this today again, he could envision how the house owner would react.

“We won’t force you to drink it, so let’s at least have one shot. That much is okay, right?”

Since there was no reason to refuse their kind offer, he accepted the coke bottle, but he did start to pay close attention to every existence in the room. When the door clicked open, he was startled and his shoulders twitched unknowingly. After taking a shower, Sieon, who was still drying his hair, sat next to Jaeyoon. When he saw the Coke Jaeyoon was holding, he whispered creepily into his ear.

“Don’t even dream about assassinating me.”

“…….”

Worried that he might end up drinking the beverage the other perceived as poison, he looked away and caught Hyunjoon looking at him. Meeting his eyes, Hyunjoon raised his glass and smiled. Unwillingly, Jaeyoon also faintly smiled in answer.

“Come on, come on, although it’s late, but it’s because that jerk dropped off the face of Earth, so let’s celebrate and toast that rude jerk for passing the 3rd round.”

“I can’t believe you passed before graduating, you terrible fellow.”

“Congratulations! May the people who get caught by you in the future rest in peace!”

“…….”

Jaeyoon also raised his glass of soju mixed with a bit of Coke. When he tried to put it down after only pretending to drink it, Haeyeong pressured him with a sharp look, so he just closed his eyes and emptied it. The piquant taste and aroma of soju lingered in his mouth and traveled down his throat. It was a taste so pungent that it made his eyes sparkle. He could bear it thanks to the sweet taste of cola but his head spun with the strength of the rising alcohol.

The bottles emptied quickly. As fitting of his friends, they all seemed to be able to hold their liquor. In the midst of them, who were rowdy, Jaeyoon nibbled on the side snacks while playing with Soonsoon on his knees. Sometimes when he felt a stare on himself, and turned his head; it was Hyunjoon. Whenever that happened, Hyunjoon chuckled but Jaeyoon felt strange.

“Isn’t someone calling you?”

Jinwook said, catching the small vibrating sound that was quietly ringing. Only then did Jaeyoon realize that he’d come here without even calling home; he searched his bag and took out his phone. Sure enough, there were as many as 5 calls from home. Jaeyoon pressed the call button and moved to the kitchen.

[Where are you?!?]

The mom’s voice overflowing with worry cascaded directly into his ears. Since there was still no news about her son, who had said he’d come home right after he finished the CSAT, it was no wonder she was worried.

“I’m really sorry. Now… I was with friends.”

[Then you should have called. Why make us worry?!]

“Were you worried?”

[Of course! We thought there was some accident or something. Are you with Yoonjae?]

“Yes.”

Though, to be precise, I was with Yoonjae’s older cousin and his friends.

[What about the exams? The score?]

“Ah, right.”

[You really! They’re solving it on the TV now. Hurry up and try to guess it.]

“Yes. I’ll do that.”

[Call immediately.]

“Yes.”

Hyunjoon was standing right behind him when he hung up after hearing a wave of nagging.

“Seems like they were very worried.”

“Ah, yes… I forgot to call.”

“Sieon was the one who made you forget?”

“What?”

“We’ll be seeing each other a lot from now on.”

After saying meaningful yet mysterious words, Hyunjoon opened the fridge and took out the water. In a conversation whose direction was completely unpredictable, Jaeyoon, who had distinctly realized that they were Sieon’s friends, decided to ask something he had been curious about since before.

“Excuse me, what are you celebrating?”

“Eh? You didn’t know?”

How would I know if you don’t tell me? Hyunjoon smiled softly and poured water into a cup. Soonsoon, who followed Jaeyoon thinking she was getting something to eat, gently wagged her tail and watched on.

“Should I tell, shouldn’t I…”

There was subtle mockery in his voice, so Jaeyoon frowned unknowingly.

“We’re congratulating Sieon on passing the BE. The second round was announced at the end of October and it was also announced not long ago that he passed the interview.”

“BE… as in the bar exam?”

“That’s right.”

Come to think of it, when he’d come to his house for private lessons, Sieon had said he was a law major. So, he’d been in the middle of studying for the bar exam? When he’d said he didn’t have any time to spare since he was an examinee and the other had snorted and pretended not to hear – that reaction made sense now. He didn’t know he’d been studying for the bar exam. But he’d actually passed that difficult thing?

Now he could kind of understand why Sieon had gone into hiding. To focus on the last spurt, he’d also neglected monitoring Jaeyoon. But it was really shocking. Jaeyoon was confused because it was oddly plausible, even though it didn’t really suit him, who was so well matched with blood and violence, to be given the use of the cane of justice.

“Then, if he passed, prosecutor or judge… he’ll become someone like that, right?”

“I guess.”

Oh my God.16 Jaeyoon mourned any poor criminal who got caught by him and vowed never to do anything bad in the future.

Asking to be excused, Jaeyoon returned to the living room and turned on the TV, to the program where they went over the solutions to the CSAT questions. The English part was already more than half over, so he had no choice but to find the correct answers in tomorrow’s newspaper.

Math was difficult, as expected. He just had to go over the language section, but as he didn’t know the correct answers, he was worried.

He did consider calling Yoonjae and asking him for the correct answers, but Yoonjae, knowing Jaeyoon’s personality all too well, would definitely ask why he’d missed the first part; Jaeyoon, who was bad at lying, would then have no other choice but to tell the truth, so he stopped himself. If the language part came out as predicted, then the score would be similar to that of the last mock exam. He would know when he went to school tomorrow, but Jaeyoon, who had no fluctuations in his grades, remembered the teacher’s encouragement of ‘just keep it up’ that he’d received during the meeting and thought he had done well.

“Did you doze off during the exam?”

“Heok!”

Sieon, who had appeared behind him who knows when, looked with pity at the score Jaeyoon had calculated. It couldn’t be anything but terrible without the language section, but even if he couldn’t offer comfort and encouragement, to say it so openly to the examinee who had just completed his exam was a little too much.

“You want to go touch some grass at least?”17

“…….”

If he were to make excuses to the person who had passed the BE even before graduating, he felt he’d only get laughed at – that man really would laugh – so Jaeyoon kept silent.

“Congratulations on passing.”

He’d learned about it belatedly, but since Jaeyoon was polite, he bowed his head and expressed his well-wishes.

“I don’t want to hear that from a fellow like you, who got that kind of score.”

Really, such bluntness. However, the kind-hearted Jaeyoon paid him no mind. This was just what that guy was like. His short experience had taught him that the person passing out from stomach ulcers and going to the hospital would only be him if he kept paying attention to every little thing.

“Will you be… a prosecutor?”

And he asked what he was really curious about.

“Of course.”

“Why?”

“There’s some bloke I have to get rid of.”

His eyes shone with determination and his voice was resolute.

“They’ve really been getting on my nerves.”

Since the standard of getting on one’s nerves entailed extremely individual criteria, Jaeyoon simply kept quiet. Please, don’t build up evil. He sincerely expressed his deepest condolences to the future of the Korean legal profession.

“If you’re done with your business, then go clean up outside.”

“Yes?”

“It’s been a mess since I was out of the house for a while. Since those things are laying all over the place, push them to the hallway and kick them out.”

“But they’re your friends…”

“Who’s my friend? Those things are my enemies.18

“…….”

“Lim Taehwan, you jerk. I will definitely repay this debt.”

Blazing with anger, Sieon made insidious remarks about Taewhan, who’d disclosed his home address without permission. Jaeyoon unconsciously stiffened, wondering whether he’d paid his own debt.

“If it’s troublesome, you can put it in the garbage bag and throw it along with the trash.”

Hearing Sieon casually utter such frightful words, he immediately threw out a question that just came to him.

“Perhaps did you… call me here to clean?”

“If you’re my lover, you should be cleaning up.”

The man’s face was nonchalant, as if saying ‘why are you even asking?’. Only then did Jaeyoon become aware of the purpose he’d been brought here for. He realized that there was an irreconcilable wall in his future with Sieon, who had the formula of lover=cleaner.

TN:

1) word(?) – So to explain the overuse of (?) here, it was in the RAWs but it’s intentional and to indiacate that he (or the author) isn’t sure he’s using the right words, or it’s right but questionable, it’s very common to see in Korean variety shows, hopefully I explained it well enough ^^ Also, it appears later too, but I won’t be explaining it anymore

2) heng, heng – crying sound

3) uhwang cheongsimwon – A traditional Korean herbal medicine, to better cope with unexpected situations. It is an over-the-counter remedy and the anxiolytic pill is made of ox bezoar, civet, and herbal ingredients. The pill is effective when people panic and need to return to a calmer state. It is a good anxiolytic medicine without generally stimulating locomotor activity due to exposure to a new, strange environment. It was originally made by Heo Jun, a royal physician and the author of an encyclopedic medical book written in the 17th century during the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). The UNESCO-registered “Donguibogam” states ‘uhwang cheongsimwon’ is a remedy for middle-aged or older patients who tend to pass out because of a stroke or hypertension. It is now produced by Kwang Dong Pharmaceutical, one of the country’s leading drug manufacturers. It can be used for those with cardiovascular and hematopoietic problems.

4) Lee Wanyong – Korean people regard him as a traitor to the nation. He was a Korean collaborator who was pro-Japanese and is remembered for signing the Japan–Korea Annexation Treaty, which placed Korea under Japanese rule in 1910. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ye_Wanyong

5) boss – girlfriend

6) Pontiac

7) Kingka – Basically Mr. Perfect, the most popular and handsome (mostly) boy at school. They’re often supposed to be shown ‘respect’ and are known as perfect. They’re like Miss Popularity at school. Sometimes can be bitchy to others below them, because they take advantage of such a title. Or the guy version of Queen Bee if you will.

8) taffy – To eat yeot, a Korean traditional taffy. This taffy is a popular gift given to students who are going to be taking an important exam. This is probably due to the word yeot coming from the Korean word meaning ‘to stick’ which also has the meaning ‘to pass’ as in pass an exam. source: wiki

9) screw up – 엿먹어라 = Eat yeot/taffy – basically, 엿 was the word the Namsadang (a Korean itinerant troupe which consists of male performers who present various performing arts such as acrobatics, singing, dancing and playing like a circus) used to mean vagina, the common word being 씹(which, btw, is suspected to come from 씨+입 as in ‘seed mouth’ hahahahaha) (source: mykoreanstudy.tumblr.com). In modern times, the Korean phrase ‘eat yeot’ (엿 먹어라) has a vulgar meaning, comparable to using the words ‘fuck you’ in English. The phrase originated from the middle-school entry exams scandal of 1964. One of the multiple choice questions asked in the exam: ‘Which of the following ingredients can be used instead of yeot oil (엿기름; barley malt) to make yeot?’ The correct answer was diastase, but another one of the multiple choices was mu juice, which many people argued was also a correct answer. The parents of the students whose grades suffered from this result held demonstrations and protests in front of government education bureaus and offices, holding up yeot made with mu juice and yelling to the officials to ‘eat yeot’. The phallic shape of raw yeot had also led the candy to be used as a euphemism for penis as early as the sixteenth century.

10) poured salt of him – 염장지르다 – this actually has three meanings, which are: a) to make one angry (from 염장, meaning salt and soy sauce – when you oversalt something and can’t eat it anymore), b) to poke/hurt one’s insides (from 염장, meaning heart and intestines/guts – reopening one’s old wounds), c) to stab someone (from olden times, when a general who was called 염장 stabbed someone). Also, fun fact: Korean politicians seem to love using it, lmao

11) Queenka – Queenka is basically Queen Bee, or the female version of Kingka if you want.

12) Parasuicide = apparent attempted suicide without the actual intention of killing oneself.

13) They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned – Idiom, literal translation would be, ‘Frost can fall even in May and June, if a woman harbors a grudge

14) Ppengppengie – it means wheel of fortune/circle or random) some pics

15) squid

16) Oh my God. – In the RAWs it was in English but written in Hangul

17) touch some grass – For luck, like the four-leaf clover but just summed up into a grass

18) Those things are my enemies. Editor’s note: This reminds me of that one Sherlock episode, when John was telling Sherlock how his friend had called, to which Sherlock became alarmed and said he didn’t have any; John just said “enemy, then”, and Sherlock calmed down immediately, asking “Oh, which one?”. It’s seriously that type of situation with this guy.

(Still looking for TLC if you’re interested ^^)

Sorry again, but in exchange I decided to post the full last part of chapter 2, I was planning on doing 5 parts but since it took so long, I’ll just do 4, now we’re finally a little ahead so I just need to TLC and discuss with my editor so hopefully the updates will be every 2 weeks now ^^;;

Also, I’ve decided to make my own website, so you’ll find me here now, PUIW will be hosted on Miritranslations but Top Secret will be co-hosted until this chapter and then only on my own website from chapter 3, I decided so because Miritranslations isn’t mine and Miri seems to be swamped with IRL and MIA and I didn’t have enough permission to make it easier to navigate and stuff, hope you’ll enjoy it here, I’ll also start posting some teasers soon, too
